Federica Brignone was expected to be one of Italy's greatest hopes at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina, but she now faces a long road to recovery after a serious crash at the Italian Championships. The 34-year-old from Milan suffered a displaced and comminuted fracture of the tibial plateau and fibular head in her left leg as a result of the incident.

Federica Brignone suffered a broken leg after a fall during the giant slalom at the Italian Championships.
A CT scan at the Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento following the crash revealed that she had a displaced and comminuted fracture of the tibial plateau and fibular head in her left leg.
Brignone is one of Italy's brightest hopes ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano Cortina, having won the giant slalom at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships earlier this year.
The FISI Medical Commission wished Brignone well in a post on social media.
"The FISI Medical Commission is closely monitoring the condition of the athlete from Valle d’Aosta and has arranged her transfer to the "La Madonnina" clinic in Milan, where further radiological examinations will be conducted, and the surgical plan will be defined," read the post.

The 34-year-old from Milan is a three-time Olympic medallist after picking up two bronzes and a silver at Beijing 2022 and Pyeongchang 2018.
Brignone was in the process of wrapping up the most impressive season of her career, having also claimed the top spot in the overall standings of the World Cup last month.
