French skier Cyprien Sarrazin out of intensive care after suffering horror training crash at World Cup event in Bormio

Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin was airlifted to hospital, undergoing surgery after a training crash last week in Italy as he prepared for the Bormio World Cup. The French Ski Federation confirmed he was "awake and conscious" after the surgery, but they have now provided a further update on his condition on social media. Sarrazin was aiming to defend his downhill World Cup win from Bormio last season.

The French Ski Federation has offered an update on Cyprien Sarrazin, who was involved in a horror crash while training for last weekend's World Cup in Bormio. He slid into the netting on his second training run and was airlifted to hospital, undergoing surgery for a subdural haematoma last week.

After initially confirming the skier was "awake and conscious" following the surgery, the federation has provided a further update, stating that Sarrazin has now left intensive care.

"The recovery phase on Saturday, December 28 went well and his health is stable. He was released from the intensive care unit and hospitalised in a care unit," the translated statement on X read.

"A long period of recovery and then rehabilitation now begins and the length of his unavailability is currently undetermined.

"The rest of the medical assessment (painful foot and knee) is very reassuring and, despite the violence of the shock, no other injuries were found. The MRI performed on December 31 suggests repatriation to France this Friday, January 3."

The races went ahead at the weekend, with Alexis Monney winning the downhill, and Norway’s Fredrik Moller the Super-G.

Sarrazin had started his season in steady fashion with a top-10 finish in the downhill in Beaver Creek, but did finish second in the Super-G that weekend. He won the downhill in Bormio last season, on his way to recording four victories in what was his best season to date.

The 30-year-old Frenchman's Bormio victory last season marked him out as one to watch ahead of the next Olympics, but it remains to be seen how long this setback could keep him out of competition.

He is not the only star on the sidelines - Mikaela Shiffrin gave an update on her return to training following a puncture wound sustained in a crash in Vermont, while Aleksander Aamodt Kilde remains without any definite return date following a crash last January.

Bormio is set to host the men’s Alpine events at the 2026 Winter Olympics, while the women’s races are set to be held at Cortina d'Ampezzo.
