Camille Rast reflects on 'extraordinary' Kranjska Gora double after denying Mikaela Shiffrin sixth straight slalom win

Camille Rast ripped up the script at Kranjska Gora with a stunning second run in the slalom to dramatically deny Mikaela Shiffrin a sixth consecutive slalom slalom victory. It comes a day after the Swiss skier won the giant slalom on a memorable weekend for the 26-year-old. Shiffrin had to settle for second place, and was denied what would have been a 107th World Cup win.

Camille Rast sensationally ended a run of five consecutive slalom successes for Mikaela Shiffrin after a stunning second run at Kranjska Gora on Sunday.

Shiffrin had left herself in an ideal position to continue her run in Slovenia and claim a 107th World Cup victory after finishing within 0.10 seconds of Rast.

The American was the penultimate skier out of the traps for the second run, and managed to beat her first run time of 50.34 with a time of 50.00.

But Rast’s final time of 1:40.20 ensured the Swiss star finished 0.14 seconds clear of Shiffrin to claim a giant slalom and slalom double over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the podium was completed by Rast’s compatriot Wendy Holdener in third with a time of 1:42.03 on a fine day for Swiss skiing.

The brilliance of the action will only increase the anticiation ahead of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, which starts on February 6 and is live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

"I gave it everything I had this weekend," said Rast after the race.

"Achieving the double was extraordinary. I think a lot of energy [was the key]. It was a big battle, my energy made the difference, the preparation was perfect."

Commentator Matt Chilton described the action masterfully on TNT Sports, but was forced to eat his own words after Shiffrin was denied another historic win at the death.

Commentating on Shiffrin’s second run, Chilton said: "What a start this is from Shiffrin! Absolutely full throttle at the top.

"It's as if this course has been designed by her coach rather than the Swiss team. Look at Shiffrin go here!

"She's added a third of a second, she's going to put severe pressure on Cami Rast, who will be the last skier on the mountain. Unbelievable skiing from Shiffrin, she's in a different league here.

"Magnificent Mikaela Shiffrin! That was otherworldly from Shiffrin, and I just don't think Rast can beat it Shiffrin in a different league today."

With Rast up next, Chilton added: "It's got to be the ride of her lifetime from Cami Rast to overhaul Mikaela Shiffrin's lead.

"It's magnificent again from Cami Rast, yesterday's winner, going for the GS and slalom double. She's going to go close; can she beat 1.40.34? Yes, she's done it!

"Rast has done it, I can't believe I ever doubted her, and Shiffrin's run of World Cup slalom success ends right there!"

This was a landmark win for Rast, who sealed a fourth World Cup win of her career and seemingly consigned her injury issues to the past.

A hip problem plagued her progress last season, but she is clearly in fine form now, with the Winter Olympics now just a month away.
