Lindsey Vonn comeback continues with strong run, Lauren Macuga claims maiden World Cup win at super-G at St Anton

There were impressive showings from American duo Lauren Macuga and Lindsey Vonn as they finished first and fourth respectively in the super-G at St Anton in Austria. Macuga, 22, was delighted to see her returning compatriot succeed, while Vonn celebrated the race winner's success. It is the latest race in Vonn's return from a six-year retirement in the sport she once dominated.

Lauren Macuga claimed her first World Cup win in the super-G event at St Anton, while Lindsey Vonn took fourth place.

In a strong showing for the United States team, 22-year-old Macuga built on her early impressive form with success in Austria.

The American won by 0.68 seconds, clear of second-placed Stephanie Venier in her home country, while Swiss athlete Lara Gut-Behrami - the Olympic champion - was 1.26s behind in fifth place.

"I can’t believe it, it’s so exciting," Macuga said after the win. "I don’t even think the nerves have settled in. I’m just waiting for it to hit me."

Vonn was 1.24s behind, and she praised her team-mate, celebrating the success of her compatriot.

"It was a crazy run today," Vonn said. "I’m also really proud of my team-mate Lauren. It’s really nice to be part of such a fun team. It’s great to see another American on top of the podium."

Macuga is only in her third full World Cup campaign and had been building on six top-10 finishes, with a fourth-place run coming in the downhill at Beaver Creek in December.

"I know that I had the potential to ski on the podium," she added. "I knew it was there, I didn’t think it would be today."

Vonn, returning from a six-year retirement - and a 40-year-old veteran of the sport - was happy with her efforts.

"It was really bumpy, the light was really flat when I went," she explained. "I think it was a really good step forwards. [Saturday] gave me a lot of confidence."
