It's time for the Winter Olympics! Lindsey Vonn is one of the biggest names competing at this year’s Milano Cortina 2026 Games. The 41-year-old’s return to the piste was one of the stories of the season across all sports and she was in brilliant form ahead of her tilt for a remarkable gold. However, it ended in disappointment when Vonn crashed out of the women’s downhill.

Not only is Vonn one of the biggest names in skiing history, with the third-highest number of Alpine skiing World Cup wins, this season she has authored one of sport's greatest comeback stories.

For those who might have missed it, Vonn retired after the 2019 World Championships, citing her body breaking down, leaving her unable to compete anymore.

However, in November 2025, Vonn made the stunning announcement that she was planning to return to alpine skiing, with the aim of getting into the US Olympic team for Milano Cortina.

Vonn's return to skiing has been nothing short of extraordinary. On December 12 she triumphed in the downhill at St. Moritz, the 83rd victory of her career. She followed that up by finishing second the next day and has since added more five podiums, including a second victory.

But sport can be cruel as well as kind. Vonn required another miracle comeback after tearing her ACL at Crans Montana just nine days before she was due to compete in the women's downhill.

Despite this, she vowed to compete and completed two training runs without any issues.

However, it ended in disappointment when Vonn suffered a broken leg in the women's downhill after a huge crash early in her run.

When did Lindsey Vonn compete at the Winter Olympic Games?

Lindsey Vonn was due to compete in both the downhill and the super-G.

There had also been speculation that she would compete in the team combined, alongside fellow superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, but that was not confirmed.

How many medals has Lindsey Vonn won at the Winter Olympic Games?

Lindsey Vonn has competed in four Olympic Games and she has won three medals.

Vonn won downhill gold in 2010 in Vancouver as well as bronze in super-G and she then won downhill bronze in Pyeongchang in 2018 after missing 2014 through injury.

What records could Lindsey Vonn have broken at the Winter Olympic Games?

Lindsey Vonn would have had age records in her sights at Milano Cortina.

Currently, the oldest skier to ever medal at an Olympics was France's Johan Clarey who took silver in the men's downhill in Beijing in 2022, at the ripe old age of 41 years and 30 days.

Vonn was poised to break that as she was older than Clarey heading into the Games.

However, if she had won gold then she would have blitzed the record for the oldest gold medal-winner in Alpine skiing.

Ironically, the record is currently held by legendary Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal, who won downhill gold at the age of 35 in Pyeongchang. Svindal is currently Vonn's coach and treated TNT Sports' viewers to a hilarious interview after her win in St. Moritz.

Had Vonn won one more gold than compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin, she would have become the American with the most Alpine skiing golds at the Olympics.

Vonn was bidding to overtake Julia Mancuso for the most medals by an American woman in Alpine skiing at the Olympic Games. Mancuso has four medals, while Vonn has three.

Whilst Shiffrin will have a small chance of overtaking Bode Miller's six medals for the most by an American alpine skier at an Olympics, Vonn could have matched her compatriot.

Lindsey Vonn is currently 41-years-old, having turned 41 in October 2025. As we mentioned before, this places her as older than Clarey, and opens the door for her to break the Frenchman's record as the oldest winner of a alpine skiing medal at an Olympic Games.
