Marco Odermatt extends giant slalom hot streak after ice-cool second run in Schladming

Marco Odermatt recovered from a poor first run to fight back from 11th place and take victory at the Schladming giant slalom night race. The Swiss Olympic champion set a time that nobody else could match after a lightning second run, pipping home favourite and midway leader Manuel Feller by just 0.5 seconds in a thrilling finish to the race.

Marco Odermatt launched a devastating second-run charge to extend his remarkable giant slalom dominance in Schladming.

The Swiss star, 26, ranked 11th after an uncharacteristically substandard first run but topped the rostrum after a faultless second to edge out halfway leader Manuel Feller by five-hundredths of a second in a dramatic finish.

Odermatt's latest victory was his 19th overall in giant slalom and ninth consecutive success in the event since finishing second in Palisades Tahoe in February 2023.

"I know I would have been first after the first run if it wasn't for the mistake, so I didn't try to do something special," he said.

"I knew I had to stay on the line. The snow was very difficult today, so the tactic wasn't to go full attack. You really had to ski clean and I managed to do that, so I'm very happy."

Odermatt has now climbed the podium in each of his last 22 giant slalom starts and looks on course for a third consecutive World Cup title, holding a 596-point lead over France's Cyprien Sarrazin.

Odermatt has the chance to extend his lead further when the World Cup action resumes this weekend with two Super G events in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
