Lindsey Vonn 'happy' despite missing out on successive World Cup wins as Nicol Delago takes gold in Tarvisio

After 15 years, the World Cup was back at Tarvisio and Lindsey Vonn was one of only two riders in the current field who last raced at the Italian resort. The veteran American, who is preparing for next month's Winter Olympics, had the chance to claim successive World Cup wins after victory in Zauchensee last week but came up short on the "tricky" course as home star Nicol Delago came up trumps.

Lindsey Vonn was 0.26 seconds off the pace during the women's downhill in Tarvisio as she missed the chance to seal back-to-back World Cup victories.

After clinching victory in Zauchensee last week, the 41-year-old was looking to make a statement in Italy but was outdone by home star Nicol Delago, who took top spot on the podium.

Kira Weidle-Winkelmann was also too strong for Vonn on Saturday as the German finished second, 0.20s adrift of Delago's winning time of 1:46.28.

Team USA legend Vonn started well in the early sectors and looked on course to pip Delago to gold but her run deteriorated as she came down the slopes.

"I don’t really remember the track," said Vonn, who was one of only two athletes in the current field who raced at Tarvisio when it was last active in the World Cup downhill 15 years ago.

"But I do remember that the atmosphere was amazing and the people were amazing. I met some fans earlier and they were singing songs about me. It was awesome. So I’m so happy to be back on the podium again under tough conditions. So it couldn’t be better."

Despite missing out on gold, Saturday's result meant that Vonn has made the podium in five straight races.

Vonn leads the overall standings in the downhill discipline with a 144-point lead over Emma Aicher, who failed to podium on Saturday with a fifth-place finish.

In the general overall standings, she moved up to third ahead of the super-G on Sunday. Compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin is in pole position with a lead of 170 points ahead of second-place Camille Rast - neither of whom are currently racing downhill.
