Noah Lyles missed out on becoming the first American man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to complete the sprint double at the Olympics. The 100m gold medallist at Paris 2024 achieved the feat at the World Championships in Budapest last year, but finished third in the 200m on Thursday evening. Noah Lyles missed out on the chance to make history after he finished third in the 200m final, failing in his bid to complete the infamous Olympic sprint double.
The American revealed he had contracted Covid after the race, which was won by Botswana's Letsile Tebogo.
Lyles also pulled out of the 4x 100m men's relay, seemingly confirming his withdrawal via a post on his social media channels.
Thursday marked an anticlimactic end to the 27-year-old's bid for an historic sprint double, as well as the fabled treble.
But how historic would the achievement be? Who has secured a sprint double before? Has anyone completed the treble?

Who has won the sprint double at the Olympics?
Just 16 athletes have completed the 100-200m double, including nine men and seven women.
The last to write their name into the most acclaimed section of athletics history books was Jamaica’s iconic sprinter Usain Bolt.
Bolt doubled up at both Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016, making him the first athlete to complete the fabled treble-double.
But the Jamaican is the only male sprinter to bag the Olympic double this side of the millennium, with compatriot Elaine Thompson-Herah matching Bolt’s feat in Rio and Tokyo.
Archie Hahn of the USA was the first to do the double, way back in 1904 when 11 seconds dead was enough for the gold in the 100m and 21.60s in the 200m.
Has anyone won the sprint treble at the Olympics?
The treble of 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay has been won 10 times in the history of the Olympic Games, with nine sprinters counting themselves on a very esteemed list.
Just four men have completed the treble at a single Olympic Games, and only one has achieved the feat twice: Bolt.
The Jamaican won the 4 x 100m relay in two out of his three victorious 100-200m Olympic Games: at London 2012 and Rio 2016.
Not only is Bolt the only treble-double winner, he is also the only double-treble champion.

Interestingly enough, the treble is more common among women than it is among men.
Five of the seven female sprinters to do the double also completed the treble in their career, with Fanny Blankers-Koen of the Netherlands the first in 1948.
By contrast, only four of nine male double champions can list a treble on their CV: Jesse Owens, Bobby Morrow, Carl Lewis and, of course, Bolt.
