Oklahoma City Thunder have not appeared in an NBA Finals since 2013; the Indiana Pacers' absence, meanwhile, dates back 25 years. The two sides meet in the end-of-season showcase starting on Thursday.

The Pacers, though, are riding the crest of a wave of stunning momentum. Despite finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference, they dismissed the top-ranked Cleveland Cavaliers 4-1 in the semi-final and sealed their spot in the end-of-season showcase with a 4-2 win over the New York Knicks.

Run to the finals

The Pacers could hardly have been given a tougher run to the finals, but they have ultimately made light work of their run.

Rick Carlisle's side romped to seven victories in their final eight matches of the regular campaign, a streak of form they carried into the play-offs to down the Milwaukee Bucks with two games to spare in the opening knockout round.

They were similarly dominant in their semi-final triumph over the top-seeded Cavaliers to reach the Eastern Conference finals for a second year running. This time around, they went on to seal their spot in the final two with an impressive win over the Knicks, who were bouncing off their victory over 2024 champions, the Boston Celtics.

Meanwhile, the Thunder - the top-seeded Western Conference side - batted away the Grizzlies in their opener but were pushed all the way by the Denver Nuggets, eventually sealing passage to the Conference finals with a 125-93 victory on Game 7.

MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a crucial figure throughout his side's run. The 26-year-old has been a revelation for Mark Daigneault's side in both the regular season and play-offs campaign. His 40-point heroics led the Thunder to a narrow 128-126 victory over the Timberwolves in Game 4, and he posted a further 34 as his side clinched their spot in the NBA Finals in Game 5.

Key players to watch

If you are picking out a key player to watch in this year's NBA Finals, look no further than Gilgeous-Alexander, who has enjoyed a remarkable campaign.

The Canadian was named MVP after averaging 32.7 points per game in the regular season - per NBA - becoming the third player in the history of the Oklahoma City franchise to win the honour.

Gilgeous-Alexander made his own slice of NBA history, joining Michael Jordan as the only players to average at least 32.0 points and 6.0 assists per game and shoot 50.0% or better from the field in a season, the NBA said upon naming him MVP.

Tyrese Hailburton (Pacers) is another to watch in the finals. He enjoyed an upturn in the latter stages of the campaign and led several stunning comebacks for his side during the post-season, most notably in Game 2 against the Cavaliers and Game 1 against the Knicks.

Pascal Siakam's experience in the NBA Finals could prove pivotal, as he looks to lead his Pacers side to the championship. The 31-year-old was a key part of the Toronto Raptors side that claimed glory in 2019 with victory over the Golden State Warriors in the final.

Jalen Williams, meanwhile, will look to continue his excellent string of performances against the Timberwolves, which saw him average 22.2 points-per-game.
