Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken dies aged 27

The International Biathlon Union confirmed the death of Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken at the age of 27. He had been in Italy for a training camp as he prepared for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games. Bakken had four World Cup victories, and was the reigning European champion in the 10-kilometre sprint and two relays.

Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken has died at the age of 27.
Bakken, a hopeful 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games, had been in Italy for a training camp.
Bakken had four World Cup victories, and won the season-long title in the mass start discipline in 2021-22.
International Biathlon Union President Olle Dahlin said: "The IBU is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Sivert Bakken’s sudden death.
"Sivert’s comeback to biathlon after a period of great hardship was a source of immense joy for everyone in the biathlon family and an inspiring demonstration of his resilience and determination.
"His passing at such a young age is impossible to comprehend, but he will not be forgotten and he will forever remain in our hearts.
"The IBU’s thoughts are with Sivert’s family and friends, his team and all members of the Norwegian biathlon family at this very difficult time."
Bakken was diagnosed with a heart condition called myocarditis in 2022, and took a break from the sport.
He returned to competition in November 2024, and was the reigning European champion in the 10-kilometre sprint and two relays.
