GILL HITS HUNDRED AS INDIA WHITEWASH SORRY ENGLAND
Shubman Gill scored a brilliant hundred as India beat England by 142 runs and completed an ODI series whitewash in Ahmedabad.
Gill's seventh ODI century, in his 50th game, was supported by half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, each of whom shared 100-run partnerships with Gill.
Despite four wickets for Adil Rashid and a late fightback from England's seam bowlers, India posted 356, a total England could not get close to.
That Tom Banton, in his first 50-over game since 2020, and No 8 Gus Atkinson led the scoring with 38 runs apiece summed up England's demoralising batting display. But for Atkinson's late hitting, the margin of defeat would have been more embarrassing.
England and new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum have much to consider heading into this month's Champions Trophy. India, who will play all their games in the UAE rather than host nation Pakistan, look ominously strong.

TNT SPORTS EXPERTS REACT TO THE SERIES WHITEWASH
Steven Finn: "Clearly there's a lot to work on for this England team. To expect them to go to India and win I think was fantasy - even [Eoin] Moragn and [Trevor] Bayliss' team, the great tema that they had in 2017 and 2021, lost both times.
"So to expect these guys at the beginning of a new era to come here and beat India and beat this Indian team that are so fantastic in their own conditions I think was a tall order. Would we expect to see more levelness across the series? Probably, becasue we know that England, especially in the batting department, do have the ability and the talent to be able to compete with India but they never quite managed to put it together."
Matt Prior: "It's not been good enough [the batting], we haven't scored enough runs. I think that's a really good point, it's not just that England have lost, it's how quickly they've been out of the game and how been ominous it's been from very early on. Whether they've been setting a total that we've probably known wasn't quite enough runs, or today chasing a massive first-innings total... To lose as they have I think has been quite shocking."

IYER EYES TAKING THIS 'MOMENTUM' INTO CHAMPIONS TROPHY
"Today I got the opportunity to go in the middle again and Shubman and Virat left a great platform to me to go and excell," Iyer says as he's interviewed on the pitch. "Overall it's beat a great series for me... I wish I could have got a hundred."
He scored 59, 44 and then 78 in the three games
"The dressing room is electrifying with a lot of energy," Iyer adds. "I personally think that each and every individual in the team is in great form and I think it's a great boost for us to win this series and the momentum from here on into the Champions Trophy."
ENGLAND LOSE BY 142 RUNS
It's a sorry end to a sorry ODI series for England, as they are blown away by India and fail to make the run chase a close-run thing.
The Champions Trophy is fewer than 10 days away and there's much work for England to do. India, on the other hand, look ominously strong.

Atkinson backs away, exposing his stumps, and when he misses the ball, it hits. It's all over and India win by 142 runs, to take the series 3-0.

Atkinson goes again and shows off, executing a reverse sweep for four. A singke follows and sees him become England's joint-top runscorer this game.

Atkinson hits two more fours, then heaves Pandya back over his head for six.
He's not going down without a fight. Only Duckett and Banton have scored more runs for England this innings.

Wood swings at a short ball and holes out to Iyer on the off-side boundary. England are 193-9, one wicket away from defeat.

These two are going to go down swinging and each slash to the boundary, with an Atkinson edge for four also chucked in for good measure.

Wood hits Pandya to the boundary off the last ball of the other, but he doesn't mind. Pandya enjoyed the Rashid wicket and stared down the man who dismissed him earlier.
FINN ON ENGLAND COLLAPSE
"It's spiralled at bit there hasn't it?" Steven Finn says on TNT Sports.
"It looked as though England might threaten when Banton and Root were together, it looked like they were building a partnership...
"Everyone else has struggled for fluency. We expected the ball to skid on and be a better pitch under lights. We've seen a little bit of uneven bounce if we're trying to give a little bit of benefit to the England batters there, but what we've seen has been quite prevalent throught the whole of this ODI series."

Pandya bowls a slower-ball bouncer and Rashid bottom edges onto his stumps. He's out for a duck.

England still trail by 183 runs - they're not even halfway to the target.

Anticipating Livingstone would come down teh wicket, Washington drats one down the leg side and Rahul completes a smart stumping.
That nine from 23 is the coda to a sorry tour for Livingstone, who has failed to reach 50 across eight games.

Four runs from the Rana over, and Livingstone swings and missess and England limp towards defeat.
India were 189-2 at this stage of their innings.

Livingstone gets off the mark from the ninth ball he faces. Just two runs scored from another excellent Kuldeep over.

A wicket maiden for Rana! That sums up where the game is at the halfway stage of England's chase.

Rana comes back into the attack and strikes first ball as Buttler drags a wide, short delivery onto his stumps. England's captain departs and with him go their hopes of chasing the target, you can't help but feel.

Brook dances down the track and launch Kuldeep back over the bowler's head. It's a much-needed six for England and a bettter over, with the strike rotated and 11 runs coming off it.

Brook hits a lovely four, using his feet and driving out of reach of mid-off, but the other five deliveries are all dots.

Kuldeep stays tidy. He;s going at an economy of 3.80 with the one wicket, and India think it's two for a moment as Rahul's quick hands break the stumps. But Buttler was comfortably in.
Still, with just three runs scored it's another good over for the hosts.

Three runs and a wicket from the over. India will take that every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Root gets yorked by Axar, seeking to drive, and plays on!
India are elated and rughtfully so, England's batter you'd most trust to build a stablising innings is walking. It's 134-4.
England 133-3 (Root 24, Brook 3) Over 20 (Kuldeep)
The run rate has fallen to 6.65 and the required rate is now 7.47. England losing wickets and ground.
England 129-3 (Root 22, Brook 1) Over 19 (Axar)
Another tight over, three runs from it, with a Root pull shot where he momentarily looked to be in trouble and then some fine Pandya fielding to save a single the highlights.
England 126-3 (Root 20, Brook 0) Over 18 (Kuldeep)
Just three runs from the over, then the wicket of Banton just as he threatened to build a big innings. Kuldeep is tormenting England again.
WICKET! Banton (c Rahul b Kuldeep)
Banton plays forward and looks to defend, but gets a feint edge and is caught behind!
He's confused and reviews, but there's a clear spike in the sound waves. Banton departs for 38 off 41 balls and England are in desperate need of a partnership now.

"Not lose a wicket and build," says Matt Prior on TNT Sports. "England are still up with the run rate. They are still very much in this game."

A splendid reverse sweep by Root gets England off the Nelson numbere in style and ensures the second Kuldeep over is more productive for the batting side.
It's time for drinks.

Pandya plucks a straight drive out of the air and tries to run Root out, but throws into the batter's pads instead. No hint of an appeal for obsructing the field.
That encounter and a firm cover drive for four, off the bat of Banton, headline the 15th over.

Kuldeep comes on and allows just three runs.
England 99-2 (Banton 24, Root 7) Over 13 (Pandya)
With the dot balls adding up, Banton gives himself room and when the delivery is short, pulls through cow corner for four.
Pressure lifted, but there's almost a disaster for England next ball. The two batters are caught in a mix-up and Axar, at point, has a real run-out chance. He starts running in, then decides he needs to throw and misses the stumps from within eight yards! A massive let-off for Banton.

Just four runs from Axar's second over. The squeeze is on.

Banton rides a short ball nicely and pulls to the boundary, the highlight of an over England only score five from. Pandya comes back well with four straight dots.

Axar starts with a brilliant maiden, quickly bowled, and the powerplay ends in a whimper for England.

The bad news? Both openers have now gone and only one powerplay over remains.

Salt attempts to lift a ball down to third, but with no pace on the delivery he can only loop an easy catch to the ring fielder.
Salt falls softly and a promising England start is in danger of fizzling out. Salt faced 21 balls for his 23.

Welcome back, Banton! He middles reverse sweep for six, edges a four and adds a single. Twelve from the over.

Banton, playing his first 50-over game since 2020, makes a sedate start and there is just one run off the Arshdeep over.

Ultimately though, Arshdeep got his revenge.

There is the India breakthrough. Arshdeep's slower knuckleball gets the better of Duckett, who hits it high but not far and is caught by the India captain.
Duckett got England off to a flyer, with 34 from 22 balls, but must walk. Or perhaps hobble.
England 60-0 (Salt 16, Duckett 34) Over 6 (Washington)
India turn to spin and immediately Rana saves two runs with a diving half-stop as England bring up their half-century. It's just temporary respite. Duckett and the wicketkeeper both miss a ball which dribbles away for four byes and Salt smashes a drive through the covers.
The run rate is up to 10.00. Duckett's health is the only bad news for England.
England 48-0 (Salt 9, Duckett 33) Over 5 (Arshdeep)
Stand-and-deliver stuff from Duckett, who crashes back-to-back-to-back-to-back fours with no foot movement. Going short doesn't help the bowler, but a slower ball does.
England 32-0 (Salt 9, Duckett 17) Over 4 (Rana)
Duckett scoops one ball to fine leg, then edges the next to the same region. Both score four runs.
A single - just England's second of the chase - is added, plus a wide, before Salt scuffs one through a leg-side gap to cow corner. The run rate is 8.00, the required rate 7.07.
England 18-0 (Salt 5, Duckett 8) Over 3 (Arshdeep)
Four leg byes keep things ticking over for England, but Salt can't get Arshdeep away for any runs off the bat. Until the last ball, which he crashes through midwicket for a one-bounce for. That was reminiscent of so many overs in India's innings.
England 10-0 (Salt 1, Duckett 8) Over 2 (Rana)
Rahul wears one on the knee behind the stumps and England grab a bye. The wicketkeeper waves ahead the physio, but that must have hurt.
Duckett also does not look too comfortable. Given the Champions Trophy is just around the corner - and the priority, as Duckett has been at pains to point out - you wonder if it's smart for him to be opnening. But back-to-back fours, whipped past mid-on and then lifted over midwicket, are a good tonic.
England 1-0 (Salt 1, Duckett 0) Over 1 (Arshdeep)
A tidy start from India and Arshdeep, as a lone flick off the hips from Salt is the only scoring shot.
ENGLAND CHASE SET TO BEGIN
Duckett, who for a while in the India innings was off the field after limping around, and Salt are opening again. Arshdeep has the new ball.

CAN ENGLAND CHASE 357?
"It's a big ask, underpinned by those top-order runs," says Steven Finn on TNT Sports.
"It could have been a lot worse for England. At Drinks at the 33rd over they were 221-2 India, so we were looking at way beyond the total that they ended up getting. England plugged away, they bowled them out, 357 is the target. Still feels like it's going to be a tough ask, but tradionally chasing is easier here, the wicket should get better."
"They did [manage to stop the rot]," adds Matt Prior. "Fair play to the England bowlers, they've come back and they're still in the game."

Arshdeep misses the final ball of the innnings, is unsure whether to run or not and Salt throws down the stumps. India are all out for 356, with Wood bowling a really good final over.
England need 357 runs to win.

Washington elects to keep the strike, searching for the big shot, but in the end can only hole out to cow corner.

First up, Atkinson is full, wide and splayed to the backwards-point boundary.
Rana launches a half-volley back over Atkinson's head for six two deliveries later.
Thirteen runs and a wicket from the penultimate over.

A helpful cameo, featuring two lovely shots, comes to an end as Rana tries to hit a third and doesn't connect properly.

Rana plays one brilliant shot for a No 9, a back-foot drive through the covers. The Wood over goes for just six runs, featuring three runs, and it is perhaps curious he will not bowl 10. Wood has bowled eight so far at an economy of 5.25 - Mahmood's 10 went for 6.80 and Atkinson, who'll bowl the penultimate over, is up at 8.71.

A hard-run two keeps Rahul on strike and he subsequently carves Mahmood through point, but is out next ball. Eight runs and an important wicket off that over.
WICKET! Rahul 40 (lbw Mahmood)
Mahmood bowls a corker which Rahul cannot hit and the ball continues into the back pad. It was en route to the leg stump and Rahul is plumb LBW. A review will not save him.
Still, his 40 from 29 balls is a valuable contribution.

One six in the over as Rahul clears his front leg and launches Root back over the bowler's head. Eleven runs in total.

Whisper it quietly, but England may be taking the sting out of this. Another boundary-free over, with just five more remaining.

Pandya launches Rashid for back-to-back sixes, but btheowler responds with an absolute beauty which bamboozles Pandya - who is only trying to defend - and hits the top of off stump.

Nine more runs for India, four via a brilliant Rahul cut shot. With 10 overs to go, India remain poised to set a big total, but with two new batters at the crease England have a sniff.

The penultimate Rashid over goes for 11 runs, but crucially features a wicket.
Rashid has taken three of England's four wickets.

Another for Rashid, off what honestly was a horrible ball. Full and down the leg side, Iyer looks to help it on its way but only gets a feather of an edge of the ball and Salt takes a really good catch.
Iyer's fast-paced innings comes to an anti-climactic end.

Iyer gets to his half-century with a top edge which lands in a gap. He's striking at 116 and has given Gill another able companion, with their partnership now worth 100 runs.

Gill uses his feet to charge at Rashid and pump him over mid-off, and the leaping boundary fielder, off the final ball of an otherwise-tight over.

Gill now has T20I, ODI and Test hundreds at this venue. High praise is flowing his way.

Kohli stays sweeping a tickles one for a boundary, before Gill comes down the wicket and hits Root through cow corner for the same result.

England turn to spin with the fielding restrictions lifted and Kohli takes advantage with a couple of streaky fours to end the over, taking this partnership beyond 50.
The first a sweep shot which came off the top edge or back of the bat, the second an attempted drive edged through third.

England introduce Atkinson in their first bowling change and his opener goes for nine runs, four of them off a thick Gill edge and then four more via a beautiful straight drive. Shot of the day.
Both teams can be happy enough with the power play. England have restricted India to barely five runs an over and dismissed the dangerous Rohit. India have a platform to build from, against tourists who have struggled to score in the series so far.

Gill changes Mahmood, who drops his length short, but Gill fetches it to pull over cow corner for a one-bounce four. It breaks a run of 10 dot balls, though is the only runs off the over.

Wood hits Kohli on the elbow with a short ball, prompting a quick visit from the physio. He seems fine, but can't score off a tightly bowled maiden.

A mix-up has Kohli scampering to get back into his crease, but he gets there just in time. Gill turned him back, having had to cover the chance of the ball being deflected only the non-striker's stumps, and a direct through would have brought a wicket. Alas, Wood just missed and Kohli had made his ground by the time Salt took the bails off.
As if trying to prove a point, Kohli hits the next two balls for four; a wrist flick through leg and a drive towards point.

Kohli plays and misses at a delivery moving away, but looks more comfortable afterwards as India pick up a trio of singles.
Wood then does find the edge with the over's last ball, but Gill splits the slips and picks up a boundary. It did not look like it carried, although Wood had Gill squared up and panicking.

Gill adds another four, advancing down the track and hitting down the ground, but a two.
India make it to 23-1 after five overs, having not been given a lot to work with by Wood and Mahmood.

BANTON PLAYING FIRST ODI IN MORE THAN FOUR YEARS
The new face in the England team is down to bat at No 3, shifting Root down a spot.
Banton last played a 50-over game in 2020, for England against Ireland. It’s a quirk of the domestic schedule that he, a Hundred regular, has not played one for Somerset since, and hardly ideal preparation for someone set to be added to England’s squad for the Champions Trophy.
