India to face New Zealand in semi-final
Jacob Bethell hit a remarkable century that proved in vain as England could not quite chase down India's huge tally of 253-7.
Harry Brook won the toss and put the tournament co-hosts into bat but in the third over the England skipper, crucially, dropped Sanju Samson on 15 and he would go onto top score for India with 89 off 42 balls.
He was far from the lone contributor with India hitting 19 sixes in all and Ishan Kishan (39 off 18) and Shivam Dube (43 off 25) in particular kept the momentum going through India’s innings, ensuring their total would be north of 200.
Late hitting from Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) and Tilak Varma (21 off 7) took the target from difficult, to near impossible at a rate of 12.7 an over.
After losing Phil Salt (5), Harry Brook (7) and Jos Buttler (25) in the powerplay, England's task looked parlous but Bethell's incredible 105 (off 48 balls), which included eight fours and seven sixes, kept his side in with a slim chance of victory all the way until his dismissal in the final over.
Will Jacks supported him with 35 off 20 balls before brilliant fielding from Axar Patel saw him catch and then fling a ball to his team-mate Shivam Dube as he was about to cross the boundary rope.
Needing 30 off the last over, Bethell was run out going for a two off the first delivery. With the game gone, Jofra Archer's late trio of sixes gave the score a slightly flattering look for England.
India will now meet New Zealand in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
India win by seven runs!
Archer ended the innings hitting three sixes but England fall short. The game was over by then but an amazing, and fitting, end as Archer hit three sixes from the last three legal deliveries, to end on 19 not out.
Wicket! Bethell run out (Hardik) 105
England 225-7 (Overs 19.1)
Bethell hits Dube straight down the ground and come back for two which was never there and fine fielding from Hardik gets the ball to his wicketkeeper and England's star is out.
England 224-6 (Bethell 104, Overton 1)
Overs: 19
A fine penultimate over from Hardik and England need 30 off the last for a miracle win.
Wicket! Curran c Tilak b Hardik 18
England 222-6 (Overs 18.3)
Curran just a couple of metres short as he holes out to deep mid-wicket. A big ask for new batsman Overton.
England 222-5 (Bethell 103, Curran 18)
Overs: 18.2
The first ball is belted by Bethell and just reaches over the boundary with Axar at wide long off getting fingers to the ball but unable to claw it in. Hundred for Bethell! Off 45 balls.
England 215-5 (Bethell 96, Curran 18)
Overs: 18
Just six runs off Bumrah's last over. England clearly not taking risks as they will look to get 20 runs off each of the last two overs instead.
England 209-5 (Bethell 94, Curran 14)
Overs: 17
It started off a decent over, but Bethell hit a low full toss for six and then deliberately edged a wide ball past the wicketkeeper for another four.
England 192-5 (Bethell 83, Curran 11)
Overs: 16
Bumrah's penultimate over...Curran flicks the third ball behind square leg for four. Just the eight off the over. They will need to go big off the three remaining overs he is not bowling.
England 185-5 (Bethell 81, Curran 5)
Overs: 15
Bethell steers Varun's first ball for two to third man and then smacks the next down the ground for four. Curran takes one ball to play himself in and then turns the next through mid wicket for four.
Wicket! Jacks c Dube b Arshdeep 35
England 172-5 (Overs: 14)
Arshdeep with a wide slow, short ball which may have been a wide but Bethell guided, a little unconvincingly, over fly slip for four.
Arshdeep is unhappy after being called for three straight wides....
But then... Jacks slices a wide full toss to the backward point boundary, where Axar catches the ball then passes to Hardik, as he is about to run over the boundary, who catches the ball.
India 160-4 (Bethell 65, Jacks 35)
Overs: 13
A pie on leg stump from Axar is ploughed high into the second deck of the second tier at square leg. A miss-field then helps him to another boundary through the covers.
This is a remarkable effort from these two batters to get England still in the game at this stage, considering the target.
England 145-4 (Bethell 61, Jacks 24)
Overs: 12
Bethell with a reverse lap for four but thereafter just singles off Varun's over...until the last ball which Jacks smacks high over the deep mid-wicket boundary.
England 131-4 (Bethell 55, Jacks 16)
Overs: 11
Jacks chops down on Bumrah's second delivery and hits wide of cover point for four. Bethell reaches his half-century off 19 balls - the joint quickest of the tournament. A lovely pull from Bethell gets another boundary.
India 119-4 (Bethell 49, Jacks 11)
Overs: 10
Bethell could have been run out but Axar could not collect the throw from backward point. Just the five off the over though. Very good over though, just the six off it.
India 113-4 (Bethell 48, Jacks 9)
Overs: 9
Bethell rocks back and slams Varun through deep mid-wicket for four. He then moves wide of leg and lifts over the covers for another. Jacks is almost bowled but then hits the next ball to square leg for another four.
India 99-4 (Bethell 39, Jacks 4)
Overs: 8
Jacks misses an attempted reverse sweep off his second ball, before he bludgeons the last off the back foot, pulling for four.
Wicket! Banton b Axar 17
England 95-4 (Overs: 7.3)
Banton goes for a third six trying to drag the ball high over mid-wicket but he is bowled.
England 95-3 (Bethell 39, Banton 17)
Overs: 7.2
Axar comes into bowl and they put a man on the reverse sweep so Banton puts the ball over the cover point boundary. The next ball goes high over deep mid-wicket for another maximum.
India 83-3 (Bethell 39, Banton 5)
Overs: 7
Bethell takes a few deliveries before managing a clean hit off Hardik but he clears the mid-wicket boundary and then reverse laps over the slips for four.
England 68-3 (Bethell 26, Banton 4)
Overs: 6
The last ball of the powerplay sees Banton reverse sweep for four. That's 23 off the over. It might not have been the worst thing to lose Buttler there.
Wicket! Buttler b Varun 25
England 64-3 (Overs 5.5)
After Bethell sensibly farms the strike following his blitz, Buttler tries to hammer Varun and is bowled.
England 64-2 (Buttler 25, Bethell 26)
Overs: 5.4
Bethell with three sixes on the trot. First it was off the toe of the bat but Bethell still carried the boundary over long on and he followed with a more convincing high drive over long off. Then came a reverse sweep over backward point.
England 45-2 (Buttler 25, Bethell 7)
Overs: 5
Bethell gives himself room backing outside leg stump and, as Bumrah follows him, he clips over backward square leg for six.
The last ball finds the edge of Bethell but flies safely to third man.
Wicket! Brook c b Bumrah 7
England 38-2 (Overs: 4.1)
A fantastic catch as Bumrah's slower ball is hit high over the covers from Brook, playing it one handed, but Axar running towards the boundary catches on the dive brilliantly.
England 38-1 (Buttler 25, Brook 7)
Overs: 4
Brook rocks back and hits a slow bouncer over wide mid on for four. The last ball saw Buttler hit cross-batted over cover point and the boundary rope.
England 25-1 (Buttler 18, Brook 1)
Overs: 3
Buttler misses the first ball wildly but then chops down on a corker and pushes straight down the ground for four. After missing a couple more, he then hits a full ball inside long off for another boundary.
England 15-1 (Buttler 8, Brook 1)
Overs: 2
Brook gets off the mark but then Buttler plays out three dots before attempting to lap a ball wide of off stump which only garners a leg bye.
Wicket! Salt c Axar b Hardik 5
England 13-1 (Overs 1.1)
Salt playing against the swing, hits Hardik high in the air and he is caught at backward point by Axar.
England 13-0 (Salt 5, Buttler 8)
Over 1
Salt clips the first ball to fine leg for four. Buttler then flays a wide ball high over the covers to the boundary at cover point. After a dot ball Buttler, then inadvertently flicks an inswinger between his legs for four. Could his luck be changing?
England response set to get underway
It goes without saying a good start is required. They have the record chase on this ground, 230 against South Africa ten years ago.
End of Innings! India 253-7 (20 Overs)
Samson Sanju’s brutal 89 led India to set England the huge target of 254 to reach the final of the T20 World Cup.
It could have all been different though if Harry Brook had not dropped Samson off Archer when the opener was on 15.
Sanju (89 off 42) was far from the lone contributor with India hitting 19 sixes in all.
Ishan Kishan (39 off 18) and Shivam Dube (43 off 25) in particular kept the momentum going through India’s innings ensuring their total would be north of 200.
Late hitting from Hardik Pandya (27 off 12) and Tilak Varma (21 off 7) took the target from difficult, to near impossible - at a rate of 12.7 an over.
All the England bowlers suffered some battering though spinners Will Jacks 2-40 and Adil Rashid 2-41 had some success.
Wicket! Hardik run out 27
India 251-7 (Overs: 19.5)
It was a risk giving Jacks the ball for the last over and after a single from Axar, Hardik hits him high over deep mid-wicket then, after turning down a single, smacks the ball high down the ground to bring up the 250!
Hardik opts to go for a two after miss-hitting the next ball and can't beat Curran's throw.
India 237-6 (Hardik 14, Axar 1)
Overs: 19
India 237-6 (Hardik 14, Axar 1)
Overs: 19
The only plus for England there is that India ran through for a single off the last ball, so Hardik will not be facing first.
Wicket! Tilak b Archer 21
India 236-6 (Overs: 18.5)
Archers last over saw Tilak hit him for three sixes in the first four balls. The first smacked wide of long on and then one on the stretch guided over backward point. A ball on Tilak's hip was then helped over backward square.
Archer finally gets his man with a yorker off the penultimate ball of the over.
India 217-5 (Hardik 14, Tilak 3)
Overs: 18
It could have been an even better over for England as Banton dropped Hardik off the next ball, diving as he ran in from mid on.
Dube run out (Brook) 43
India 212-5 (Overs: 17.3)
The first ball is a slower one from Curran which again goes for a maximum from Dube.
But two balls later, Hardik called him for a single then sent him back and Brook throws down the stumps, with just one to aim at.
India 205-4 (Dube 36, Hardik 13)
Overs: 17
Outstanding shot off Hardik's second ball as he casually lifts a ball just above off stump over Buttler for a boundary. He then hits a wider delivery past cover point for a second boundary in the over. A late cut through wide third man brings up a third. The 200 is up!
India 190-4 (Dube 35, Hardik 0)
Overs: 16
Two dot balls end the over and the spell from Rashid.
Wicket! Suryakumar st Buttler b Rashid 11
India 190-4 (15.4 overs)
Dube stretches wide of off stump and it doesn't look like he gets everything on it off the bar but it comfortably flies over the extra cover boundary. A slog sweep from Suryakumar then lofts the fielder on the mid-wicket boundary.
But then Suryakumar comes down the wicket and misses an attempted sweep wide of off stump and Buttler takes off the bails behind the stumps.
India 177-3 (Dube 28, Suryakumar 5)
Overs: 15
Dube pounds Curran's moon ball over the bowler for a four and ten from the over in total.
India 167-3 (Dube 20, Suryakumar 3)
Overs: 14
Other than a loopy wide, a good over from Jacks there. The first over without a boundary all innings.
Wicket! Samson c Salt b Jacks 89
India 160-3 (Overs 13.1)
Once more Jacks picks up a wicket as a wide ball is toe-ended high in the air and caught by Salt coming in from the cover-point boundary.
India 160-2 (Samson 89, Dube 17)
Overs: 13
Archer starts well with two dots and a single, but then a wide one allows Samson to whack over the backward point boundary with a flourish. Another wide full ball sees Samson hit for six wide of mid off. He is nearing his century.
India 145-2 (Samson 76, Dube 17)
Overs: 12
Dube launches a full ball from Rashid high over long on first up and then the penultimate ball sees the left-hander slog sweep high over deep mid-wicket for another maximum.
India 130-2 (Samson 75, Dube 3)
Overs: 11
Samson stands and delivers the first ball from Overton high over long off. Just singles off the rest of the over. A win of sorts.
India 119-2 (Samson 67, Dube 1)
Overs: 10
If only Rashid could bowl more than four overs. Just the seven, plus the wicket from the over.
Wicket! Kishan c Jacks b Rashid 39
India 117-2 (Overs 9.3)
Rashid comes back into bowl and after being clouted down the ground from his second delivery, the next sees Kishan hit the ball high in the air and Jacks catches running in from long off.
India 112-1 (Samson 65, Kishan 35)
Overs: 9
Curran comes back into bowl and Kishan hits another majestic maximum clipped high over the mid-wicket boundary. Samson beats the jumping Jacks at the mid-wicket boundary on the other side of the field. He then drives a wide full ball for four past cover point.
This is painful for England. And not even halfway through.
India 92-1 (Samson 53, Kishan 28)
Overs: 8
What a way to bring up your half-century! Brought up off just 26 balls. Dawson's delivery drifts wide of off stump, right in the opener's arc and he drives high into the stands beyond long off. Another maximum comes from the last ball off a Kishan slog sweep. An expensive first over from the slow left armer - 19 runs.
India 73-1 (Samson 46, Kishan 17)
Overs: 7
Rashid's first ball is driven through the covers for four, but thereafter a fine over from England's best ever limited overs bowler.
India 67-1 (Samson 41, Kishan 16)
Overs: 6
Curran bowls the final over of the powerplay. The second ball was verrrrry slow and Samson waits for it before slamming over mid on for a four. The next ball sees a late cut wide of fly slip for four.
The players take a re-group and a drink now.
India 55-1 (Samson 31, Kishan 15)
Overs: 5
Overton bowls his first over and opts to go fuller and, after a couple of singles, Kilshan clips with great panache behind square leg and then drives a wide ball clean as a whistle through the covers. A bouncer ends the over with a second consecutive dot. India will be loving this start though.
India 46-1 (Samson 30, Kishan 6)
Overs: 4
Samson cuts through point for four and Kishan adds another sweeping to square leg. England need a wicket.
India 30-1 (Samson 25, Kishan 0)
Overs: 3
Samson hits the first ball of the Archer over for four but the second is straight down the throat of Harry Brook at mid on, only for the England skipper drops it. An incredible six came two balls later, high into the Tendulkar stand on the leg side. He then opens the face to guide through third man from the last ball.
Wicket! Abhishek c Salt b Jacks 9
India 20-1 (Overs: 2)
Abhishek times the first ball of Jacks from middle and leg, square on the off side for four. After three dots balls, Absishek comes down the track and lofts the ball high over wide mid off for four.
But...the last ball of the over sees the batsman try to slam Jacks over the mid-wicket boundary and he is caught by Salt 15 metres in from the rope.
India 12-0 (Samson 11, Abhishek 1)
Over: 1
Samson beaten by the second delivery, but then slams the next off the back foot over mid on for four. The next is on the batsman's left elbow and Samson hooks the ball high over the rope at fine leg. A good start for India.
Abhishek and Samson on their way to the middle
They will face up against Jofra Archer with the new ball.
The players are on the field for the anthems
Rohit Sharma has placed the ball on the ceremonial truck and an umpire collected it.
The real action is close to getting underway.
