‘It was unlosable’ - Cian Uijtdebroeks spectacularly blows up in final 50 metres of decisive Czech Tour stage

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike) was caught within sight of the line in a dramatic finish to the final stage of the 2025 Czech Tour. Having attacked earlier on the final climb, Uijtdebroeks looked set to take both the stage win and GC victory as he built a lead of 20 seconds to Soudal Quick-Step’s yellow jersey Junior Lecerf but it all unravelled in the last 200m of Stage 4.

Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike) watched GC victory and a stage win at the Czech Tour slip away in heartbreaking fashion as his attack ran out of steam at the end of the final stage.

Uijtdebroeks entered Stage 4, a tough 178km test in the Moravian-Silesian mountains ending with a steep Category 1 climb, trailing Soudal Quick-Step’s Junior Lecerf by nine seconds and the Visma rider made his attack on that final ascent - quickly building up a lead of 20 seconds.

As the lead rider on the road, Uijtdebroeks was also set for 10 bonus seconds on the line as he held that advantage to the chasing pack until the final 50 metres when his strength began to fail him.

Uijtdebroeks’ lead was still enough to take the yellow jersey as he entered the barriered section, but the Belgian was fading fast at that point while Lecerf was getting support in his desperate chase from Jannis Peter (Team Vorarlberg) and Tomas Pridal (Elkov-Kasper).

After navigating the final chicane, Uijtdebroeks still had the lead but faded dramatically and Peter went past to claim the stage.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports, Robbie McEwen said: "Uijtdebroeks has blown, Uijtdebroeks will not win… It was unlosable and Cian Uijtdebroeks has been caught within sight of the line."

Head bowed and grimacing as he crossed the line, Uijtdebroeks still beat Lecerf to second place on the bike throw but that would be of little consolation to the 22-year-old after hitting the wall in such spectacular fashion.

Celebrating under the finish arch in stark contrast to his rival, Lecerf set up his GC win with a buccaneering triumph on Stage 2, punching away from a lead group of Uijtdebroeks and Alessandro Fancellu (JCL Team Ukyo) on the race’s other summit finish.

Uijtdebroeks entered the Czech Tour after taking GC victory, a stage win and the mountains and young rider classifications at the Tour de l’Ain as a brutal 2025 season finally came good.

The Belgian did not race at all in May, June or July as he battled a recurring nerve injury that had previously cut his 2024 Vuelta a Espana short, but now appears to be returning to form and finishes the Czech Tour in second place, seven seconds behind Lecerf.

Uijtdebroeks' schedule for the rest of the season is unconfirmed but he is not in Visma's squad for the upcoming Vuelta which starts August 23, while Lecerf will ride in Spain.
