Matteo Jorgenson extends Visma-Lease a Bike contract until 2029 on eve of Tour de France - 'Felt like an easy decision'

American cyclist Matteo Jorgenson is set to stay at Visma-Lease a Bike until 2029, after extending his contract with the team ahead of this year’s Tour de France. Jorgenson finished in the top 10 in last year’s edition, whilst riding in support of team leader Jonas Vingegaard. He might only be in his second season with the Dutch team, but Jorgenson is confident enough to sign a long-term deal.

Matteo Jorgenson has extended his contact with Visma-Lease a Bike until 2029.
The American spent four years at Movistar before moving to Visma last season, where he enjoyed immediate success with the Dutch outfit.
Jorgenson finished eighth in last year’s Tour de France whilst riding in support of team leader Jonas Vingegaard, who himself finished second - pipped by Tadej Pogacar to the yellow jersey.Â
Jorgenson showed his credentials by retaining his Paris-Nice title earlier this season, having also won the week-long tour last year.Â
He is clearly an asset to the Visma ranks, hence their decision to lock down his future for the next four years.Â
"I felt at home here straight away and I don’t see any other team where I can work with the same trust and calmness as I do here," Jorgenson said in the team’s official press release.
"The mentality within the team matches mine and so does the way of working. For a rider like me, who pays a lot of attention to small details, it’s really important to work in an environment where you can trust everyone around you.Â
"I’ve found that here, with the coaches, sports directors, food coaches, management, and all the other specialists.
"They look at the details even more closely than I ever could, which allows me to focus fully on my job: training and racing."

Jorgenson is on the roster for this year’s Tour de France, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, where he will once again support Vinegaard’s bid for the yellow jersey.
Visma are fielding a strong line up, including Wout van Aert, Simon Yates and Sepp Kuss.
Tiesj Benoot, Victor Campenaerts and Edoardo Affini complete the Visma team, who know they have a tough job on their hands to wrest the yellow jersey back from Pogacar and UAE Emirates-XRG.
"Winning Paris-Nice twice was something I never thought was possible before I joined this team," Jorgenson continued. "It has changed my goals and ambitions and allowed me to dream bigger.
"Honestly, it felt like an easy decision. I’ve set ambitious goals for the next four years and want to make this the peak of my career. I’m happy I can pursue those goals in this environment."
"Even though he was still under contract, it was our priority to secure Matteo for the long term," added Grischa Niermann, Head of Racing.
"Matteo is a very important rider for us in both the Grand Tours and the Classics. We have big plans with him, and we’re happy he has committed his future to us."
