Tour de France 2024: Tom Pidcock forced to withdraw due to Covid as virus spreads through peloton

Ineos Grenadier rider Tom Pidcock has been forced to withdraw from the 2024 Tour de France with Covid-19, his team announced on Saturday. The British rider was in his third Tour and helping team-mate Carlos Rodriguez challenge the top five in the general classification. Pidcock joins a growing list of riders who have been forced to end their Tour early due to illness.

Tom Pidcock has been forced to withdraw from the 2024 Tour de France after testing positive for Covid-19.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider was forced to abandon the race before the outset of Stage 14 as tensions continue to rise regarding the virus spreading through the peloton.

The team announced the 24-year-old's withdrawal on Saturday morning and posted a statement to social media.

"A disappointed Tom Pidcock will not line up for Stage 14 of the Tour de France today," Ineos Grenadiers said.

"Tom is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 and under advice from our medical team will now return home to recover."

Ineos sport director Zak Dempster later told Eurosport that Pidcock had tested positive for Covid.

Pidcock is one of a number of riders who have been forced to end their Tour early due to illness, joining UAE Team Emirates' Juan Ayuso and Astana Qazaqstan's Michael Morkov.He

It is hoped the British rider will return to action at the Paris Olympic Games, where he will defend his mountain bike title on July 29. He is also set to compete in the road race on August 3.

Pidcock's withdrawal leaves Ineos with seven riders as they aim to help Carlos Rodriguez challenge the race leaders as the Tour heads into the mountainous Pyrenees stages this weekend.
