'They can race how they want' - Jonas Vingegaard brushes off Tadej Pogacar's 'annoying' jibe at Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard says Visma-Lease a Bike will keep attacking Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France, even after the Slovenian admitted their tactics were "annoying". Pogacar covered every move on Bastille Day before launching his own attack, but Vingegaard insists their strategy won’t change as the battle for the yellow jersey heats up - especially with cracks showing in Pogacar’s support team.

Jonas Vingegaard says Visma-Lease a Bike will not be changing their approach at the Tour de France - despite Tadej Pogacar admitting he was "annoyed" by their tactics.

Visma did their best to rattle the UAE Team Emirates-XRG leader on Bastille Day, with Matteo Jorgenson launching a flurry of attacks on Stage 10.

Pogacar, unfazed, covered each one with ease before launching an explosive move of his own as the race reached its finale. Only Vingegaard could respond from the elite GC group.

Afterwards, Pogacar took aim at his rivals over their tactics - having previously called them out over the so-called "bottle-gate" earlier in the race.

"They were a bit annoying with all the attacks, so I decided to make a better attack," he said.

"Now it's a day off and it's good that I don't have the yellow jersey. Honestly, I'm most happy not to be talking to journalists."

Speaking after the rest day ahead of Stage 11, Vingegaard shrugged off the remarks and stressed Visma’s tactics would remain unchanged.

"You know, he's such a good rider that you need to do something to try to attack him," he said.

"We just want to keep fighting, keep attacking. That's how we race and they can race how they want to race."

His comments echoed those of Visma team-mate Victor Campenaerts after Stage 10, who said the team appeared to have got under Pogacar’s skin.

"We tried to attack, but the problem is we have a very strong opponent. We try to put him under pressure day after day," he said.

"Sometimes I have the impression he gets irritated, or his team gets irritated, because we try so hard.

"But we have to be honest - he's the best rider in the peloton, he's the best rider maybe of all time. So it's really hard to counter him."

Vingegaard begins the second week in fourth overall, 1'46" behind surprise yellow jersey Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and 1'17" back on Pogacar, who remains the overwhelming favourite despite not wearing yellow.

While Pogacar has looked unbothered on the bike, there are signs his support system is fraying.

Key mountain domestique Joao Almeida abandoned on Stage 9 with injury, and Pavel Sivakov was off the pace on Stage 10 due to illness - leaving Pogacar exposed in the Massif Central.
