Tour de France 2025: Tobias Halland Johannessen taken to hospital after receiving oxygen on Mont Ventoux, but ‘feeling much better’ after Stage 16

Tobias Halland Johannessen was taken to hospital after receiving oxygen at the top of Mont Ventoux during Stage 16 of the Tour de France. The Uno-X rider suffered abdominal pain near the finish but is “feeling much better”, according to his team. He remains eighth in the general classification with five stages remaining.

Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) was given oxygen at the summit of Mont Ventoux and taken to hospital after a gruelling Stage 16 of the Tour de France.
The Norwegian finished 28th on Tuesday, 5’11" down on stage winner Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal–Quick-Step), but held on to eighth overall in the general classification.
Concerning images showed Johannessen lying on the ground and receiving oxygen at the top of the iconic climb. His team later said he was "feeling much better".
"Tobias suffered some right-sided upper abdominal pain during the final climb today," Uno-X initially said in a statement on Instagram.
"He made it to the finish where he was seen immediately by the race doctors and given oxygen.
"He is feeling much better but will go to the local hospital for further checks."

Despite shipping time to his closest rivals, Johannessen remains in the top 10 heading into the final stretch of the race.
Uno-X later confirmed that Johannessen would be fit to start Stage 17 on social media, going into more detail as to the circumstances that resulted in his brief trip to hospital:
"Following thorough investigations, the medical team has concluded that Tobias suffered from severe stomach cramps during the final kilometres of Stage 16 to Mont Ventoux," the team said.
"Thanks to the swift and professional approach of the race doctors, he received immediate and excellent care at the finish. All necessary protocols were followed – which also made the situation seem more critical in the moment.

"As part of the emergency treatment, and following set procedures, Tobias received oxygen and 500 ml of intravenous saline. The treatment was administered by the race medical team as part of this emergency care and has been reviewed and approved by UCI medical staff. He has been cleared to continue racing.
"Tobias felt much better after only a few minutes, but out of an abundance of care, he was transported by ambulance to the Tour de France medical truck and then to the emergency department at Centre Hospitalier Carpentras. An ultrasound scan, x-rays, blood tests and ECGs were performed and showed no abnormalities."

Stage 17 is a transitional stage, after a tough day in the mountains and thus could also be seen as a much-needed recovery stage for those in the GC battle.
"Tobias is feeling well and will start Stage 17 today – as we look ahead to some tough final days of the Tour de France," the team's statement continued.
"Tobias and Uno-X Mobility would like to thank everyone who ensured he was in good hands after the stage and to the medical staff at Centre Hospitalier Carpentras for their swift and thorough assessment during the evening."
Earlier, Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) beat Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) to take a home win on Stage 16.
