Jonas Vingegaard makes surprising admission over 2026 goals as he weighs up Tour de France, Giro d'Italia success

Jonas Vingegaard has hinted at a Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double tilt in 2026 as he looks to complete the Grand Tour set. The Dane was victorious in the 2025 La Vuelta, to add to his 2022 and 2023 Tour de France triumphs, meaning he now has only the Giro to win to join the elite list of seven riders to have won all three - including Chris Froome and Alberto Contador.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) has admitted he would rather win the Giro d’Italia than his third Tour de France in 2026.
Vingegaard won the Tour in both 2022 and 2023, as well as La Vuelta this year, and now needs the Giro to complete the set of Grand Tours.
The Dane has never entered the Italian race before, but having been victorious in Spain this year, the opportunity to chase the triple is very much on his mind.
The 28-year-old made it clear the Tour de France is very much on the agenda of him and his Visma team, with the likelihood of the double bid only increasing.
Speaking to DH Les Sports+, Vingegaard said: "Winning the three Grand Tours or the Tour de France in 2026? I think I'd prefer to win all three Grand Tours.
"After the Tour de France and the Vuelta, I still have the Giro left but we haven't yet decided if I'll be competing in it next season.
"We still need to discuss it with the team.
"The Tour obviously remains the biggest objective, but now it's a question of whether we can combine the two next year."
Vingegaard has made no secret of his wish to join the very elite of road cycling, with only seven men winning all three Grand Tours.
Those include Chris Froome and Alberto Contador and with the Giro now the only thing preventing him from becoming the eighth member of the elite club, he previously spoke about how winning the Giro would be "a dream."
"We haven't yet established the plan with the team," Vingegaard said last month. "I have my idea, my desires. The Tour de France is so big that it will necessarily be part of this plan, and we'll see if the Giro can also be part of it.
"It would be great, obviously; it's a dream to win all three Grand Tours, for all riders, I think.
"So it's something very important for me. We could say that we try it next year and we'll see what happens, we'll see. I would also be very happy to go to the Giro."

Most riders would be content with winning La Vuelta and finishing second in the Tour de France in their career, let alone in one calendar year, but for Vingegaard, he can legitimately say it was not his best season.
"It’s a pretty good year. Not the best I’ve had, obviously, I think my 2023 season was better, but finishing second in the Tour de France and winning the Vuelta, it’s not a bad season," he said.
"Cycling also exists outside of the Tour - obviously. It's always the most important race, and that's why I say the season wasn't perfect either; I would have had to win for that - but there are also many other races, like the Vuelta."
