Vuelta a Espana 2024 full start list: Sepp Kuss faces battle against Primoz Roglic, Adam Yates to defend title

The final Grand Tour of 2024 is upon us as the Vuelta a Espana kicks off on Saturday, August 17. Sepp Kuss returns to defend his title but he faces a host of challengers including the likes of former champion Primoz Roglic. This is a gruelling and mountainous route even by the Vuelta's standards, with plenty of hardened climbers in action to try their luck at the most open Grand Tour of the year.

The Vuelta a Espana, the final Grand Tour of the year, gets underway on Saturday, 17 August.

After two Grand Tours won in dominant fashion by Tadej Pogacar and his UAE Team Emirates super-squad, we are guaranteed a different winner as the Slovenian star will not take to the start line, instead prioritising September's UCI World Championships.

Perma-rival Jonas Vingegaard has also opted not to return to the Vuelta, meaning this year – despite its stacked start list – the race is much more open.

Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike team-mate Sepp Kuss returns to defend his title but he faces steep opposition.

Kuss' former team-mate Primoz Roglic, now at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, will be hoping to put the disappointment of crashing out of the Tour de France behind him and to secure a return to winning ways. The Vuelta is a race he's very familiar with, having won it three times in a row, most recently in 2021.

And UAE Team Emirates haven't phoned it in either. They're helmed by Pogacar's right-hand man and this year's Tour de Suisse champion Adam Yates, as well as Portugal's Joao Almeida, who will look to take victory in Stage 1's time trial on home soil.

Other contenders on the heavily mountainous route include Roglic's team-mate Dani Martinez – who finished second at the Giro d'Italia – alongside Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale's Ben O'Connor and Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious.

The home nation have plenty of representation including Soudal Quick-Step's Mikel Landa, who leads the team in the absence of 2022 Vuelta champion Remco Evenepoel having recently finished fifth at the Tour de France.

What the official start list is missing is any real sprinters. With 61,522m of climbing packed into 21 stages and only one day classed as 'flat' by the organisers, they've all opted to stay at home.
