Women's Super League: Chelsea move top of WSL as pressure mounts on Arsenal's Jonas Eidevall

Chelsea returned from the Emirates with three points after a 2-1 Women's Super League win over Arsenal that puts significantly more pressure on Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall. The Swede has managed Arsenal to just one win in four games at the start of this season, while new Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor has witnessed her side win three straight league games despite having obvious teething issues.

Chelsea's 2-1 win over Arsenal at Emirates Stadium saw The Blues take top spot in the Women's Super League table, and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

It took only four minutes for Chelsea to net an opener when Mayra Ramirez scored with an inventive overhead flick.

Sandy Baltimore added a second just over 10 minutes later when she headed home her first Chelsea goal from a pinpoint cross from Lauren James.

Arsenal replied before half-time as Caitlin Foord weaved her way past Lucy Bronze and into Chelsea's box and scored off the post from a tight angle to complete a stunning solo effort.

But the hosts were unable to find a second goal despite several efforts, with Chelsea's defence and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton staying strong to keep the likes of Stina Blackstenius from equalising.

Blackstenius rocketed a volley at Hampton only for the 23-year-old to parry it away and deny Arsenal their best chance of the afternoon.

Chelsea have at times appeared to be still getting to grips with new coach Sonia Bompastor, but having won three of three, the defending champions are trending upwards and Bronze was quick to credit the French manager after a significant win.

"It has been good. She has brought in a nice atmosphere to the team," Bronze said about Bompastor. "She has brought in some new ideas and I don't think we were at our best today, but we are improving. So far, the girls are listening to everything the staff have to say, and we want to keep learning from her."

Arsenal, meanwhile, are beginning to feel the pressure at this early stage of the season, having won just one of their four games so far.

Jonas Eidevall will be feeling the squeeze most of all and was facing criticism even before this derby loss.

With Emma Hayes having departed from the league, this season was ripe for Arsenal to step up and claim the crown. They are the WSL side with the highest and most consistent attendance, but their title charge may be all but over already.

"It was a horrible start," Eidevall admitted after the game. "We conceded from the corner, and then we don't defend the cross very well either for the second goal. But I have to say that I am super proud of the players for the grit and heart that they showed for each other and the club, for sticking together in that tough moment.

"We started to play better and better, found our way into the game and started to get some real momentum. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough today.

"Of course, it is the start that kills us, but it is the mentality and bravery of the players that almost saves us."
