Arsenal defender Katie Reid is likely to be out for the rest of the season after she suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during training.
The 19-year-old has been one of Arsenal’s standout players this season and was awarded the club’s Player of the Month award for September.
She has started five of the opening eight WSL matches for The Gunners, who sit fourth in the Women’s Super League, six points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Reid also started the first game of Arsenal’s UEFA Women’s Champions League defence, a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon.
Such was Reid’s early season form with Arsenal, that she earned her first England call-up for last month’s matches with Brazil and Australia, but was forced to withdraw from the squad due to a different injury.
It is another blow to Arsenal manager Renee Slegers, who has been without Leah Williamson so far this season, as the defensive ranks begin to be tested.
Reid was absent from Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with reigning champions Chelsea on Saturday due to the injury sustained in training, with tests required to establish exactly what the problem was.
As the number of ACL injuries in the WSL has piled up this season, fans feared the worst and Arsenal confirmed on Monday that Reid had also been struck down. Per the BBC, the teenager is the seventh WSL player to suffer an ACL injury this term.
A statement on the club website read: "We can confirm that Katie Reid has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury during a recent training session.
"Katie will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
"Katie had enjoyed an impressive start to the season, making seven appearances for us and winning our Player of the Month award in September. Her fine form was rewarded with a first call-up to the England senior squad in October.
"Katie is being closely supported by our medical team at Sobha Realty Training Centre, and everyone at Arsenal looks forward to seeing her return to action as soon as possible."
Reid will join team-mate Manuela Zinsberger in spending the 2025/26 season recovering from an ACL tear, while fellow teen Michelle Agyemang, who is on loan at Brighton from Arsenal, ruptured hers during the 3-0 win over Australia.
There have been several other players at Arsenal who have suffered the same injury in the past too, including Williamson and Beth Mead.
FIFA announced in April there would be new funding for research into whether there are links between the menstrual cycle and ACL injuries due to the number of players in the women’s game who have suffered from the knee injury.
On her Instagram page, Reid said: "I am devastated to share that I have ruptured my ACL.
"There’s been lots of tears and I am sure there will be many more to come, but I am extremely grateful for the love and support around me.
"The road to recovery starts now and I’ll give my all to be back stronger."
