Harry Kane: How Bayern Munich striker reached 500 career goals - and why England captain is not yet thinking of Robert Lewandowski record

Harry Kane scored his 500th senior career goal as Bayern Munich cruised to a 3-0 win at Werder Bremen, though the England captain played down suggestions he is targeting Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record for most goals in a single season. Kane is still 15 shy of Lewandowski's tally of 41 goals from 2021/22 with 12 league games remaining. One hundred of Kane's 500 goals have been penalties.

Harry Kane scored his 500th senior career goal as Bayern Munich cruised to a 3-0 victory at Werder Bremen, though the England captain played down talk of chasing Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record for most goals in a single season.

Kane now has 82 goals in 79 Bundesliga appearances, his latest double arriving in a devastating three-minute spell during the first half, before Leon Goretzka added a third after the break at the Weserstadion.

The 32-year-old converted his ninth penalty of the campaign in the 22nd minute after the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled that Werder midfielder Senne Lynen had fouled teenager Lennart Karl in the area.

Kane doubled Bayern’s lead shortly afterwards, striking a superb effort from the edge of the box that went in off the post.

That second goal brought up the milestone of 500 senior career goals in 743 appearances for club and country, 100 of them from the penalty spot. Kane has scored all 23 of his spot-kicks for his current club.

"It was nice. Obviously, it's a proud achievement to reach 500 goals," Kane told broadcaster Dazn. "It's a lot of hard work, a lot sacrifice, so nice to reach it. But as always, it's about the next one. So the most important thing today is the win, the clean sheet."

The striker now has 41 goals in all competitions this season for the Bavarians, including 26 in the league, as Bayern moved further clear of Borussia Dortmund, who beat Mainz 4-0 on Friday night.

Kane’s 26 league goals are four more than Werder Bremen have managed as a team this season.

Yet the England captain preferred to focus on collective success rather than personal milestones - including the prospect of surpassing Lewandowski’s record of 41 Bundesliga goals in a single campaign, set in 2020/21 with Bayern.

"Anything is possible but there’s still a long way to go," Kane said after Bayern re-established their six-point lead at the top of the table.

"It’s an unbelievable record. I’m in a good moment right now and it’s nice to help the team. We’ll see where I am when we get to April - maybe I’ll start thinking about it then. But right now, it’s just about the next one."

The only concern for the visitors came at half-time, when goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was replaced because of a calf problem with Jonas Urbig coming on in his place.

However, Bayern wrapped up the win in the 70th minute when Goretzka took a touch on the edge of the area before drilling a low strike into the bottom corner.

Goretzka, who will leave Bayern when his contract expires at the end of the season, admitted that he struggled to assert himself following the arrival of head coach Vincent Kompany at the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

"The first few weeks under Vincent Kompany weren’t easy for me, but I’ve always said that we have a good relationship and that we’re honest with each other," he said.

"I’m sure if I work hard and perform, I’ll continue to get my chance. Hopefully, we’ll be able to celebrate with the fans at the end of the season."
