Liverpool: Loris Karius suffered a concussion during Champions League final

Karius was knocked to the ground by Ramos during a corner before Karim Benzema scored his infamous goal as Liverpool eventually lost 3-1 to the Spanish side.

The German goalkeeper's match went from bad to worse when he later allowed a simple Gareth Bale shot to slip past him, wiping out hopes of a comeback. He was widely blamed for the loss and has received death threats on social media.

Massachusetts General Hospital have confirmed that the goalkeeper did suffer head trauma.

"We have received numerous calls today regarding the health status of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. With Mr. Karius’s permission, we are providing information about his medical situation in an effort to prevent, where possible, the dissemination of incomplete or erroneous information," said Dr Ross Zafonte and Physical Therapist Lenore Herget in a statement.

"Additional symptomatic and objectively noted areas of dysfunction also persisted. It could be possible that such deficits would affect performance. We also note that Mr. Karius has reported significant and steady improvement since the concussive event, and we expect him to make a full recovery based on the results of the examination. We expect that with treatment and by following prescribed activity protocols he will continue to improve. We have encouraged vigilance and an emphasis on safety in his eventual return to full activity.

Merseyside Police later released a statement saying its officers were aware of “threats” made against him on social media.

The 24-year-old gifted Real the lead when he attempted to launch a quick attack, only for Karim Benzema to thrust a leg out and divert the ball into an empty net.

Karius then allowed a long-range effort from Gareth Bale to evade his grasp in the closing stages and seal Real’s victory.

Both goals were scored after Karius had collided with Real defender Ramos at a corner.

Karius flew to the US on holiday after the final and, with Liverpool determined to safeguard the player’s well-being, he visited the specialist Dr Ross Zafonte at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Dr Zafonte is a leading authority on the treatment of NFL players who have suffered head trauma.

It is understood Karius has continued his holiday Stateside and will return to Liverpool for pre-season training on July 2, although Jurgen Klopp’s side have been strongly linked with signing a new goalkeeper next season.
