'One of the best in the world' Michael Olise joins Zinedine Zidane in exclusive club after UEFA Champions League brace against Atalanta

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany feels that Michael Olise has a similar mentality to that of Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne, while "one of the best" wingers in the world joined Zinedine Zidane in an elite club of French players after scoring twice against Atalanta. Olise has eight goal contributions in the UEFA Champions League this term, after seven last season.

Michael Olise joined an exclusive club after netting two goals against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, as Vincent Kompany hailed the winger as "one of the best in the world".

The Frenchman helped Bayern Munich trounce their Italian opponents 6-1 in the first leg of their last-16 tie, and he did it in style with two stunning strikes.

His contribution made him only the second French player of all time to record seven or more involvements in successive Champions League campaigns.

France legend Zinedine Zidane completed the feat in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons when he was representing Italian giants Juventus.

Olise's first goal on Tuesday doubled Bayern's advantage, cutting in from the left as he so often does, before curling a neat strike from outside the box into the far bottom corner.

And his second effort was even better. Once again cutting in on his devastating left foot, he planted his strike into the top left-hand corner to give Bayern a five-goal cushion.

After the game, Vincent Kompany spoke of Olise's qualities and likened his mentality to that of the Bayern boss' former Manchester City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne.

"I don't think it's just my management, the trajectory I know of him was at Crystal Palace with Patrick Vieira, so I give credit to him, Oliver Grasner afterwards," he said.

"And then he arrived with the mentality that gives him the chance to be one of the best players in the world. He's very detailed in the work he does.

"And I've said it before, I don't want to compare the players, they are not the same players at all, but the mentality when I played with Kevin De Bruyne, I was lucky to watch him come through as a young player and see him become a superstar, a world star, and I saw the whole process.

"And it is the obsession for details, and Michael has that. It's not enough, so I think we have to push him to do more, but he's on a very good trajectory, and it's a pleasure to witness it."

Olise's brace on Tuesday took him to eight Champions League goal involvements for the season, with three goals and five assists.

As well as his goals against Atalanta, he also netted against Pafos - and registered two assists - as Bayern thumped the Cypriot side in their second league phase game.

Olise also registered assists against Sporting CP and Union St. Gilloise, while he also grabbed an assist in the knockout win over Atalanta.

Bayern are hoping to finish the job on the Italians in next week's return fixture when they welcome Raffaele Palladino's side to Allianz Arena.
