TNT Sports pundit Ally McCoist has taken it upon himself to dig into a potential theory in the wake of Benfica's stunning 4-2 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The Portuguese side edged their way into the play-offs with an incredible 98th-minute goal courtesy of goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, and McCoist wonders if Mourinho had played mind games earlier.

Did Mourinho deliberately hold up Benfica-Real to earn advantage? Ally has a theory...

Ally McCoist has given credence to the theory that Jose Mourinho may have dug into his bag of tricks during Benfica's sensational 4-2 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored a stunning goal eight minutes into stoppage time that squeezed Mourinho's side into the UEFA Champions League play-offs.
The Portuguese side were en route to a memorable win over the Spanish giants as they led 3-2, but due to goal difference, it was Marseille who were set to go through with a 24th-place finish.
Benfica needed a single goal to progress, and as the clock ticked into the 98th minute, the hosts were gifted a free-kick and the chance to put the ball in the box.

Trubin towered, and then powered home a header past Thibaut Courtois that elite strikers would be proud of, sending the Estadio da Luz into rapturous pandemonium.
Due to the added time, Benfica's staff and players knew they needed an extra goal due to results elsewhere, and McCoist had his say while speaking on the Goals Show.
"Here's a question," McCoist began. "Mourinho, been there, done it, turned it over. It was the last game to finish.
"Do you think he has deliberately kicked off the second half late, so that he knows what has happened elsewhere? Because I'll tell you right now, I would not put that past him."

What was bizarre was the fact that, just before the goal, it was Trubin himself who was wasting time. The Ukrainian was clearly under the impression that a 3-2 victory was enough, only for his own supporters to whistle at him to hurry up.
"The very man was wasting time! He took it down on his chest and we were all laughing at him, saying: 'Look at him wasting time.' Then the next minute, look at that," McCoist added.
Mourinho's touchline antics have always been worth a watch. Against his former club, he was just as animated as ever, and he finally recorded his first win against Madrid in his sixth attempt since leaving the club.

The scoreline meant that Benfica pipped Marseille to the 24th spot - the final play-off place to compete for a spot in the last 16.
Meanwhile, Madrid finished ninth overall, one point behind Manchester City, who took the final guaranteed spot in the last 16.
Remarkably, Benfica could face Madrid in the play-offs, or another of Mourinho's former clubs, Internazionale.
