Why Vincent Kompany may struggle to control 'hype' around Bayern Munich's new record-breaking teenage sensation Lennart Karl

Bayern Munich maintained their flawless record in the UEFA Champions League - and across all competitions - to round off a perfect few days. Following their triumph in Der Klassiker and Vincent Kompany’s contract extension, they added another emphatic 4-0 win against Club Brugge. Lennart Karl became their youngest goalscorer in the competition, aged just 17 years and 242 days old, but who is he?

Teenager Lennart Karl made a dazzling first impression on Europe’s biggest stage, marking his first UEFA Champions League start with a standout performance in Bayern Munich’s 4–0 victory over Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

Picking up on his momentum, Karl wasted no time announcing himself. Within five minutes, the 17-year-old became Bayern’s youngest ever Champions League goalscorer, surpassing a record previously held by Jamal Musiala.

Karl collected a pass from Jonathan Tah in midfield, glided past defender Brandon Mechele, and drove toward the edge of the Brugge penalty area before unleashing a swerving left-foot strike that dipped over goalkeeper Nordin Jackers.

Despite this impressive start, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany expressed caution about the attention his young winger is certain to attract.

"I'm not a fan of hype, and now he will be getting some of that. I'm a fan of training and calm," Kompany told broadcaster DAZN.

"His performance today was good. Everyone knows he can score goals, and if he keeps going like this, he'll get a chance, and maybe at the right time, he'll need a bit of calm."

At 17 years and 242 days old, Karl broke Musiala’s record by 121 days - Musiala was 17 years and 363 days when he scored against Lazio in the round of 16 four years ago.

Appropriately, Karl also wears Musiala’s former shirt number, 42. The goal was his first at the senior level, coming in his 10th Bayern appearance and third start across all competitions.

After the match, Karl collected UEFA’s Player of the Match award, describing the moment as surreal.

"It feels really good. I had the thought earlier when the team sheet came out: 'Imagine if you claim Player of the Match' and that's what happened, so I'm over the moon," he said.

When asked to describe his goal, Karl added: "I found myself in a good position in attacking midfield, got the ball, my first touch was perfect, and then I got in my mode.

"One trick to get past one player, and the shot presented itself. I'm not sure if the keeper could have saved it, but it looked good. I'll take it.

"Things are going well, but there's a lot more work to be done. Everyone can continue to work on their weaknesses and strengths, which is what I will do.

"I'm pleased with my development from the Under-17s to the Under-19s and now making my first Champions League start. I'm delighted."

Kompany calm on Karl's rapid rise

Karl’s ascent has been striking. To provide context, just last season, he was playing with Bayern’s U17 and U19 sides before travelling with the senior squad to the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where he made his debut in a 10–0 win over Auckland City in June.

Speaking back in August after Karl’s first senior domestic start in a 3–2 DFB-Pokal win over 3. Liga side Wehen Wiesbaden, Kompany urged patience with the youngster.

"We are staying completely calm with him," the coach said. "He can’t do anything wrong at the moment – no young player can.

"The expectation is always that the experienced players secure the wins, and the young players simply show that they can help us - now or in the future."

"There’s no pressure on him. Only the positive is important right now. Hopefully, he will play many games for us in the future – and then the pressure will come for him too," Kompany added.

Odegaard his role model, with a touch of Robben

An attacking midfielder who thrives as a No. 10 or on the right wing, Karl began his youth career at Bavarian Regionalliga side Viktoria Aschaffenburg before spending four years in Eintracht Frankfurt’s academy between 2017 and 2021.

His left-footed flair soon caught the attention of Bayern Munich’s scouts, and the Bundesliga champions brought him into their academy setup in 2022.

"Lennart considers Martin Odegaard as a role model, and I really do see parallels," Bayern youth coach Patrick Kaniuth has said of the player.

"But he's also a bit like Arjen Robben and Michael Olise – players who like to cut inside and finish."

During the 2024/25 campaign, Karl was a standout performer for Bayern’s U17s, producing an extraordinary 27 goals and 11 assists in just 18 matches.

His progress earned him a promotion to the U19s in February, where he was tested against older opposition while also receiving invitations to train with the first team.

Speaking shortly after joining Bayern more than three years ago, Karl outlined his ambitions: "I really want to establish myself here at Bayern and one day play for the club in the Champions League.

"I always want to play and prove myself, whether it's with the first team, the U19s or the U17s. I intend to always give my all in order to continue to develop."

Now, that dream is becoming a reality, and the hype is only going to get bigger - whether Kompany likes it, or not.
