Real Madrid 2-1 Benfica result (3-1 agg) - Vinicius Jr fires Los Blancos into last 16 as 15-time winners recover after shock Rafa Silva opener

Vinicius Junior booked Real Madrid's spot in the UEFA Champions League last-16 draw with the winning goal in an unconvincing 2-1 home victory over Benfica at the Bernabeu for a 3-1 aggregate success.

The record 15-time winners huffed and puffed for much of the night, but eventually secured their progress as the Brazil forward sped clear from a Federico Valverde pass on 80 minutes to seal the win with his sixth goal in five games.

Benfica coach Jose Mourinho was banned from the technical area after a controversial 1-0 win for Madrid in Lisbon last week, but the visitors levelled the tie overall when Rafa Silva poked home from close range on 14 minutes.

Their joy lasted only two minutes though, with Valverde setting up Aurelien Tchouameni to net his first goal in the Champions League with a fine finish from just inside the box.

Vini Jr had the final say to ensure there would not be another Benfica recovery despite Rafa Silva seeing a shot deflect off the bar in the second half.

Real Madrid, who were missing the injured Kylian Mbappe due to a knee problem, will face Manchester City or Sporting Lisbon in the next round.

They will hope for a swift recovery for Raul Asencio, who was stretchered off on 77 minutes in a neck brace after a bad collision with team-mate Eduardo Camavinga.

"The fans were not particularly happy with the way Xabi Alonso was treated, and that's when the white flags and handkerchiefs came out," said Steve McManaman on TNT Sports.

"Since then, they went on a really good run, got top of the league having chased Barcelona down.

"But then they lost to Osasuna, and they're second now by a point so they need to keep up with Barcelona until they play each other at the Camp Nou with three or four games left of the season, so that will be tight.

"But it's what happens in this competition, and they're nowhere near good enough at this moment in time.

"They need the big-hitters as soon as possible if they're going to challenge."

Real Madrid are through to the last 16 with a 2-1 win on the night for a 3-1 aggregate victory. They are in the draw on Friday and will face Manchester City or Sporting Lisbon in the last 16. Six goals in five games from Vini Jr.

"Benfica had the perfect opportunity to catch Madrid tonight, which tells you they're not good enough," he said on TNT Sports. "I know they were already a goal down, but if there ever was a night to face Madrid, it was this. What's hit you in the face all night is how low on quality Madrid have been."

Fran García replaces Álvaro Carreras for Real Madrid while Sidny Cabral is on for Leandro Barreiro for Benfica.

Plenty of added time due to the head injury to Asencio that forced him off. Not sure it will be enough time to save Benfica from the exit door.

"There's the headline," he said on TNT Sports. "It's been a real quiet night at the Bernabeu, but the man of the moment steps up. Once Vinicius Junior was away, Otamendi couldn't catch him. He opens his body up and places it in with his right foot."

Enzo Barrenechea replaces Fredrik Aursnes for the visitors as Franjo Ivanovic takes over from Andreas Schjelderup.

César Palacios replaces Arda Güler while Thiago Pitarch take over from Gonzalo García. Almost over the line in chase for last-16 spot.

Once again Rafa Silva showing his threat as he manages to prod the ball at the home goal, but Carreras does some mindful work to get that behind off his own line.

Six goals in five games from Vinicius Jr as he races clear to plant the finish beyond Trubin on the break. Surely game, set and match. Federico Valverde with the supply work.

David Alaba replaces the injured Raúl Asencio, who took a heavy head knock. Franco Mastantuono is then introduced for Eduardo Camavinga.

"Alaba hasn't go out once to warm up," said the Real Madrid UEFA Champions League winner on TNT Sports. "The injury delay has been a good few minutes, and he's had his injury troubles. The easy option is to take the young kid off. Not a big-hitter, no politics."

Not looking very good here for the Real duo as Camavinga and Asencio both collide off the ball. That was a bad collision. And a change will need to be made with the stretcher being brought on.

But Valverde can't steady himself as the shot flies wide with Dedic doing well on the cover for the visitors, who must think they are unlucky to be behind in this play-off match.

"Time and time again, Real Madrid are causing their own problems. It's really lax passing. They've got many players missing, with Militao and Huijsen at the back. But this current side in front of us, they may not get through tonight, the way they're playing."

This time Tchouameni is guilty of giving the ball away for no apparent reason, and Pavlidis sees a shot deflect wide off Rudiger. Brave defending by the German international.

A few boos, whistles and general grumbles of displeasure that Real Madrid haven't put this match away. All a bit frustrating for the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners.

No sign of the Special One so far tonight, but Benfica don't look overly troubled as Rios slams a shot well over the bar from 25 yards. Would have to be good to beat Courtois from that range.
