The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said “there is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field” after fighting broke out between players and fans following Colombia’s Copa America semi-final win over Uruguay.

There were unsavoury scenes at full-time when Uruguay and Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was among those who clashed with Colombian supporters at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The incident occurred after 10-man Colombia reached the final with a 1-0 victory, Jefferson Lerma scoring in the first half before holding on after Daniel Munoz was sent off on the brink of half-time.

“Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field,” read a CONMEBOL statement.

“We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all of their passion into cheering on their national teams and having an unforgettable party.”

Media reports say fighting broke out near the area where friends and family of the players were sitting.

Nunez was involved in a physical altercation with Colombia fans in the stands, while other Uruguayan players were also reportedly involved.

“There was no police and we had to defend our families,” said Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez, as reported by Reuters.

“This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink.”

Colombia will face Argentina in Sunday’s final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, secured their place in the final with victory over Canada.
