Gareth Southgate has led England to two straight Euros finals and was hoping to go one better than 2021, where his side lost to Italy. Southgate, who has been England's manager since 2016, could have claimed his first trophy in the role if the Three Lions had toppled Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Prior to getting England's top job, Southgate coached Middlesbrough and the England under-21 team.

Gareth Southgate was hoping to claim his first trophy as England manager after eight years in charge when the Three Lions took on Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The 53-year-old former England defender has been manager of the national team since 2016 after replacing Sam Allardyce, who resigned after just one match in charge.

Southgate has guided England to the semi-final or better at three of four major tournaments since becoming manager, including two consecutive Euros finals.

At the 2018 World Cup, Southgate became the first England manager to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup since Bobby Robson in 1990.

England suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in extra time in the semi-final and ended the tournament in fourth after losing to Belgium 2-0 in the third-place play-off.

Southgate led England to the first major tournament final of his tenure at the delayed Euros 2021, losing in the decider to Italy on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

England were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup after losing in the quarter-final to France 2-1, leading Southgate to express doubts about his future in the job.

The FA confirmed in December 2022 that he would continue in the role until after Euro 2024.

Who did Southgate manage before England?

Southgate started his managerial career at Middlesbrough in 2006, succeeding Steve McLaren who left the club to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager.

Still a Boro player at the time, Southgate was given the job despite not having the required coaching qualifications from UEFA. He announced that he would not continue as a player after getting the coaching role.

Southgate was given special dispensation from the Premier League to continue as Boro manager, despite not having a coaching licence. He would later go on to complete his coaching qualifications.

His first season as Boro manager ended with a 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

Boro were relegated from the Premier League in the 2008-09 season, with Southgate getting sacked in October 2009 as his side were competing in the Championship.

After a few years away from football, Southgate returned to the coaching environment as the FA’s head of elite development in 2012, before being appointed England’s under-21 manager a year later.

He stepped in to the senior role initially as an interim in 2016.

Has Southgate won anything?

Southgate has yet to win a trophy as England manager in eight years since taking the position.

He had a chance to win England’s first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup in this year’s Euro 2024 final against Spain, but lost 2-1, his second successive European Championship final defeat,

Will Southgate sign a new England contract?

Southgate, whose current deal with England is set to expire in December, said he hasn't yet thought about his future with the team.

He said his focus has been purely on the Euros. "Emotionally, it would be impossible for me to make a logical decision at the moment on any of that because my sole focus for two years has been winning this tournament," he commented.
