Christian Eriksen conscious after collapsing during Denmark v Ukraine match

Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, collapsed during the second half of the international friendly in Odense.

He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness and walked off the pitch. He will now undergo further tests.

”Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen said.

”He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.

”He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.

”But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”

The match was abandoned after the incident, which occurred in the 65th minute.

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojberg, who was on the pitch when Eriksen collapsed, told TV2: ”There's a throw-in. I go out to the side and I turn around a bit, and I see Christian ​on his way to the floor. We know a little about how he reacts, what ⁠that means.

”[Everyone] reacted ⁠super-fast and with respect. I can only compliment how much courage those who took care of Christian on the field had.

”I can't say much more than you get a shock. The most important thing is that Christian is doing well.”

Players from Denmark and Ukraine formed a ring around Eriksen as he received treatment, and after the match had been called off, Denmark coach Brian Riemer thanked everyone from both sides for their support.

Riemer said: ”The most important thing is that Christian ⁠is doing well and he is. He has left the field ​and he has sent his regards to the players.

”Now it's about us standing together, as you ​could see that we did in the most dignified way on the field. So it's about standing together now and of course ensuring that everyone has a shoulder to lean on ‌from here.”

And on Monday morning, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen is "doing well" and that he expects the midfielder to return home soon.

"I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits," said Boesen.

"The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home."

Eriksen's collapse against Ukraine took all by surprise, and Boesen added that players and staff are also being looked after in the aftermath of Sunday's incident.

"We are taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them," he added.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland on June 12, 2021.

The Dane – contracted by Inter at the time - recovered and was fitted with an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

He was not permitted to play in Serie A owing to the ICD and moved to Brentford in January 2022.

Eriksen then spent three seasons at Manchester United, where he made 107 appearances and won an FA Cup and a Carabao Cup.

He joined VfL Wolfsburg in September 2025 and made 34 appearances during the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.
