Jose Mourinho set for Real Madrid comeback after Florentino Perez storms to victory in presidential elections

The long-serving president was voted in again by Real Madrid's members ahead of challenger Enrique Riquelme.

The latter, a 37-year-old renewable energy entrepreneur, had promised to sign Erling Haaland and Rodri from Manchester City, and appoint Jurgen Klopp as manager if he was successful.

But voters were not swayed by Riquelme's ambitious plans, instead keeping faith in Perez, 79, who has been at the helm since 2009, during which time Real Madrid have won six UEFA Champions League titles.

Perez has also vowed to go big in this summer's transfer window, promising the signing of a "total Galactico".

"On Tuesday I'm going to make a significant offer to a top Champions League team for a top player," he said. "It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid. At least €150 million (£130m).

"When we sign someone, it's to inspire: [Luis] Figo, [Zinedine] Zidane, Ronaldo, Cristiano [Ronaldo], Kaka. The player will be of that calibre, and he won't be from the Premier League. A true superstar.

"It's not [Michael] Olise, or [Jeremy] Doku, or [Erling] Haaland. They're great players, but it's not the name I'm thinking of.

"It isn't [Harry] Kane. It's a player who plays from the midfield, or further forwards. He's a total Galactico. But first we'll talk to his club."

Perez's triumph will pave the way for Real Madrid to confirm the appointment of Mourinho, who will join for a second spell from Benfica.

And after winning the Real Madrid presidential elections, Perez hailed an "extraordinary result" that will see him retain his position until at least 2030.

"We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles," he said. "We have won at all the polling stations and achieved the second-best result in the history of Real Madrid elections. The first was also achieved by us in 2004. It is an extraordinary result.

"And I must tell you that it could have been better because nearly a thousand mail-in votes were annulled, votes certified by a notary, due to procedural issues that we will appeal, as we believe we are in the right.

"I am still here, and I am here to defend Real Madrid. We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup.

"You have demonstrated your commitment and loyalty to the club. Real Madrid has won. We have set an example to the world of democracy, transparency, and coexistence. We have shown that we are a big family, that we love Real Madrid, and that we are prepared for the future.

"As the president of Real Madrid, I am very proud of all of you. It has been a brilliant electoral day, where the members have freely expressed themselves to decide the destiny of the greatest club in history.

"This is the Real Madrid we all want. An independent Real Madrid. A Real Madrid unafraid of challenges and obstacles."

Perez also reaffirmed his commitment to bringing Mourinho back to Madrid, continuing: "We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the best stadium in the world.

"Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a madridista like Jose Mourinho. And rest assured, with me as president, Real Madrid has been, is, and will always remain owned by its members."
