Fraser Forster stars as Southampton hold Arsenal

Fraser Forster produced a man-of-the-match performance in the Southampton goal as Ronald Koeman's side held title-chasing Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Celtic goalkeeper has yet to be beaten in 360 minutes of Premier League action since returning to the Saints' starting eleven against Watford on January 13 following almost ten months out with a serious knee injury.

Forster made ten saves against Arsene Wenger's side, the best being a point-blank block from Mesut Ozil in the 20th minute, and exuded a calm authority as the Gunners dominated possession in the final 15 minutes of the match.

The draw sees Arsenal slip to fourth place, five points behind leaders Leicester City with 14 matches of the Premier League season remaining, and on Groundhog Day it looks like another New Year slump could derail their title aspirations once again.

Wenger's side have collected just three points from their last 12, and have failed to net in their last three Premier League matches.

65' – SAVE! Forster makes a double save to deny Walcott on the right-hand save of the area, following good build-up play by Alexis and Ozil.

66' – SAVE! Forster makes another save to deny Alexis from Ozil's cross, following Bellerin's looped ball down the touchline.

70' - OFF THE LINE! Ward-Prowse clears Sanchez from Ozil's corner, then Ramsay shoots the second ball over Forster's crossbar.

84' - SAVE! Forster makes another save, then Ozil and Sanchez are smothered off the ball by literally seven lime-green shirts. Last-gasp defending from the Saints.

Arsenal are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, and if they fail to score against Bournemouth at Dean Court on Sunday they will equal their worst non-scoring run for seven years, when they played out four successive goalless draws in January-February 2009.

Arsene Wenger has only beaten Ronald Koeman twice in 11 attempts as Arsenal manager (D5, L4).

Forster's 10 stops against the Gunners is the highest save total in a Premier League match.

The former Celtic goalkeeper could make a late charge to take the England number one shirt from Joe Hart for this summer's European Championships if he keeps up the form he has shown since returning from a career-threatening knee injury to Koeman's starting eleven just three weeks ago.

Forster recorded his 147th clean sheet in the 291st match of his senior career at the Emirates. He is calm, unflustered, and difficult to beat.

Southampton came into Tuesday's match at the Emirates on the back of three wins against Manchester United, West Brom and Watford, and three clean sheets.

And the Saints' central defensive pair of Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk again looked comfortable, even against the considerable attacking threat of Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Fonte has the physical presence you'd expect from a big centre-half, while van Dijk is an excellent reader of the game who can stop attacks at source through his superior positional sense.

And on the rare occasions teams get past that pair, Southampton have the excellent Forster in goal to mop up any mess.
