Erik Ten Hag says Manchester United 'suddenly showed up' in Ibiza to tell him he was staying as boss

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said that the club interrupted his post-season holiday to tell him they wanted him to stay on.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, heading up the football side of the club through his company Ineos, spoke to former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel over recent weeks - as Ten Hag revealed - with other names also considered.

But Ten Hag has said the club have elected to keep him in charge at Old Trafford, as he detailed how the news was communicated to him.

Speaking to Dutch TV channel NOS, Ten Hag said: "The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza.

"They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me."

He continued: "Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager.

"Ineos took their time. They are new in football, it's normal to reflect on the season. It's no secret that they talked with multiple candidates."

After finishing third and winning the Carabao Cup in his first campaign, the second season saw United finish a disappointing eighth in the Premier League. 

However they did win the FA Cup with a fine 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Ten Hag now seems to be in talks over a new contract with The Red Devils.

He said of a new contract: "Manchester United and I still have to find an agreement for the new contract. This isn't easily done - we are still going to have to talk about this."
