Jarrad Branthwaite: Manchester United agree terms with Everton defender

Manchester United have moved a step closer to signing Jarrad Branthwaite, with the Everton defender reportedly agreeing personal terms on a potential move to Old Trafford.

The Times reports that United are still yet to agree on a transfer fee with Everton, said to be about £70 million.

But the move has made significant progress, with Branthwaite’s representatives reaching an agreement with United that could see the 21-year-old be paid between £150,000 and £160,000 a week, according to the report.

Branthwaite – a 6ft 4in centre-back who can play with both feet – has become one of the most in-demand young defenders in the Premier League following a breakout season with Everton.

He played a crucial role in keeping The Toffees in the top flight, despite an eight-point deduction due after the club was deemed to have breached the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The Times reports that Everton’s financial situation could force the club to “cash in on their young star”.

The potential move would be a huge boost for United and manager Erik ten Hag, who this week was confirmed to remain in his role.

United are reportedly hoping to sign two central defenders in the transfer window, with Raphael Varane’s contract set to expire. Ten Hag’s side were also hit with a string of defensive injuries last season.

The Red Devils are also interested in signing 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro from Lille, The Athletic reports.

Both United and Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old, with Real Madrid said to be leading the race for his signature.
