Everton, Liverpool and Arne Slot have been charged by the Football Association after the chaotic scenes that unfolded following the 2-2 draw in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. James Tarkowski's 98th minute equaliser gave way to several incidents, which saw referee Michael Oliver hand out four red cards to Slot, his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Arne Slot, Liverpool, and Everton have been charged by the Football Association (FA) following altercations at the end of the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

James Tarkowski's stunning late equaliser saw the game finish 2-2, provoking chaotic scenes between the two rivals, leading to four red cards.

Slot, along with his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, was shown a red card by referee Michael Oliver following an incident after the full-time whistle.

The referee also issued red cards to Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure for an incident after the final whistle.

The FA announced on Friday that Everton, Liverpool, Slot and Hulshoff had been formally charged.

The statement read: "The Liverpool manager allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the match had finished.

"It is alleged that Liverpool’s assistant manager acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official, which led to his dismissal.

"It is further alleged that he acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official after being sent off."

The FA has given Everton, Liverpool, Slot and Hulshoff until Wednesday, February 19 to provide their respective responses.

Liverpool were adamant that Tarkowski's dramatic 98th-minute equaliser should have been disallowed due to a shove on Ibrahima Konate by Toffees striker Beto in the build-up.

Shortly after the final whistle, Doucoure celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans, causing Jones to confront him, and both players were then given a second yellow card and sent off.

Slot and Hulshoff also approached Oliver on the pitch and were given red cards.

The Liverpool boss admitted "emotions got the better of me," when speaking in his Friday press conference.

"What happened was that, during the stoppage time, there was a lot that happened and the emotions got the better of me," Slot said.

"I would have loved to do it differently if I could go back. I hope to do it differently the next time as well."

There is no automatic suspension for managers who are dismissed, and the FA has until Monday to communicate any sanction to Liverpool, who will then have three business days to submit a response.

The FA then has a further three days to issue a reply.

It means that Slot may well be on the touchline for Liverpool's next two games, against Wolves at home on Sunday and at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The severity of the disciplinary action against him will depend on the content of his words to Oliver, and the referee's report. An extended touchline ban can be imposed by the FA's Regulatory Commission if the misconduct is deemed serious enough to warrant further measures.

Slot has already received one touchline ban this season after reaching three yellow cards in December, forcing him to watch the Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Southampton from the stands.
