Bruno Fernandes: Manchester United captain signs new deal at Old Trafford until 2027 – ‘Relishing leading this team’

Manchester United's busy summer continues with the agreement of a contract extension for key playmaker and club captain Bruno Fernandes, keeping the Portuguese tied to Old Trafford until the end of the 2026/27 Premier League season. The deal, which includes an additional year option, reportedly makes Fernandes one of the club's leading earners.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has agreed a three-year contract extension, including the option of an additional year.

The new deal will keep the Portuguese midfielder at the club until at least the summer of 2027.

It has been rpeorted that the new deal is a significant upgrade on terms and makes him one of United's top earners.

If he is indeed placed on par with his best-paid teammates, that would Fernandes around the reported £350,000-per-week mark of Casemiro.

The deal indicates a desire to keep Fernandes central in the new era at United under the ownership of Ineos.

“Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United," Fernandes said in a statement. "I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.

“I have had so many special moments here already; hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights and lifting trophies at Wembley.

"But I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I didn’t believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still to come.

“From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead. I can see how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward.”

Fernandes joined United in the January transfer window of 2020, making an immediate impact with eight goals and seven assists in the league as The Red Devils finished third.

The former Sporting Lisbon star has been a virtual ever-present since joining United, missing just seven Premier League games in his four full seasons in England so far.

He has piled up 79 goals and 67 assists across all competitions, winning the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup last season while also helping Portugal to the Nations League title in 2019.

United's sporting director Dan Ashworth said: “Bruno has performed at such a high level with remarkable consistency since he arrived at Manchester United.

"He is a brilliant leader, driving the daily standards and inspiring the players and staff to perform at their highest levels every day.

“Bruno’s dedication to the club epitomises what it takes to be a United player. He remains pivotal to everything that we want to achieve here, and we look forward to working together to deliver the success that this club demands.”

United have enjoyed a busy summer so far with the arrivals of defender Leny Yoro and striker Joshua Zirkzee. The club also confirmed the signings of Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui on Tuesday.

Mason Greenwood, Willy Kambwala, Alvaro Carreras and Donny van de Beek, Raphael Varane and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have all left the club as United continue their rebuild under a new structure.
