Anthony Gordon feels Newcastle United set a new standard with their resilient display against Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday, and said that his side's "main priority is a trophy." Pep Guardiola's side dropped points for the second Premier League match in succession, with Gordon netting the equaliser from the penalty spot at St James' Park.

Anthony Gordon feels that Newcastle United have "got so much more to give" after putting in a strong showing to draw 1-1 with Manchester City at St James' Park.

Josko Gvardiol put Pep Guardiola's side ahead in the first half, but the Premier League champions were pegged back by Gordon - filling in at striker for the absent Alexander Isak - from the penalty spot after he was brought down by Ederson.

Newcastle's character and resolve was firmly on display, and Gordon was pleased with the level of performance after confessing to his side being "nowhere near" their usual standards so far this season.

"It's a really good place to be, considering we've been nowhere near what we can do," the England international told TNT Sports.

"We've got so much more to give but that's our level now, that's our standard in terms of effort and no matter who we play, we have to stick together and dig in like that."

Newcastle went into Saturday's lunchtime kick-off reeling off the disappointment of a 3-1 defeat to Fulham, and Gordon said the reaction on the training ground led to their stronger showing against Guardiola's side.

"I could feel we would have that reaction based off the training we had done," he said.

"We had a training week where everyone was kicking each other. You could see everyone wasn't happy from the previous game."

And despite going 1-0 down to a composed Gvardiol finish 10 minutes before half-time, Gordon said the hosts "felt OK" and were "very positive."

The 21-year-old, who said after the match he is still gaining match fitness and is only at "90%", played in the unfamiliar striker role with Newcastle's star man Isak out through an ankle injury.

But Gordon was still a thorn in City's side and scored his second goal of the season with a well-taken penalty on 58 minutes.

The strong showing had Gordon talking about trophies - saying it is the club's "main priority" - with their Carabao Cup third round clash with AFC Wimbledon next up on Tuesday.

"It's massive, that's our priority," he said.

"Everyone...said the main priority is a trophy. And like I've just said then - whether it's Man City or Wimbledon, we have to play the same and hold our own standards."

SCHAR - 'TODAY WE SHOWED WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF'

Fabian Schar agreed with Gordon's assessment that Newcastle's performance against City was a marked improvement on their previous endeavours so far this season.

The Switzerland international hailed Gordon's "brilliant" performance as a replacement for Isak, and said his side must "try to keep building" on their showing at St James' Park.

"The first games of the season weren't our best performances, and today we showed what we are capable of," Schar said.

"So now we try to keep building on that performance and do the same in the next games and there are a lot of positives."

The defender added that the raucous home crowd gave the hosts "extra energy" as they were forced to come back to salvage a point from Guardiola's side - and even felt his side were in the ascendency after the equaliser.

"Always when you play here when you score, especially against Man City, the fans see how much you put into the game and obviously they're 100% behind us and then gives us some percentage of extra energy.

"We tried to go again and score the second but in the end I think we take the point".

The draw sees Newcastle pull up to sixth in the Premier League ahead of the remainder of the weekend's remaining fixtures.

City remain top, but could be level with Arsenal if the Gunners pick up a victory against Leicester City.
