Premier League round-up: Aston Villa and Brighton earn key away wins, Leicester fight back to stun Southampton

Aston Villa and Brighton continued their strong starts to the Premier League season, winning difficult away games at Fulham and Newcastle respectively. Elsewhere, Southampton looked on course to get their first win of the season against Leicester, but conceded in the dying seconds to send the away fans into raptures and the home fans into a stunned silence.

Aston Villa came from behind to win 3-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage and go fourth in the Premier League table.

The hosts, having enjoyed a strong start to the season, came flying out of the blocks at Craven Cottage, taking the lead just five minutes in when Raul Jimenez chased down a long ball before firing past Emi Martinez.

That lead did not last long, though, with Morgan Rogers levelling just a few minutes later when his deflected shot deceived Bernd Leno.

In a first half of end-to-action and attacking intent, the hosts had a huge chance to regain the lead before the half-hour mark, but Martinez was on hand to save an Andreas Pereira penalty after Matty Cash had handled in the box.

Villa took advantage of that reprieve, taking the lead on the hour mark when Ollie Watkins nodded in from a corner for his fifth goal of the campaign. And Fulham’s misery was compounded not long later when Joachim Andersen was sent off for bringing down Watkins as the last man.

Unai Emery’s side made use of the extra man immediately, scoring a third when a cross from Lucas Digne was met by Fulham’s Issa Diop, who could only turn the ball into his own net.

Wasteful Newcastle beaten by resilient Brighton

Brighton continued their excellent start to the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Brighton, against the run of play, took a first-half lead through in-form Danny Welbeck, who netted his fifth goal of the season, driving into the box before guiding his finish coolly into the bottom corner.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Newcastle, who had the better of the play for long periods but struggled to carve out high-quality chances, and wasted several promising openings.

Brighton lost Welbeck to injury in the second half and will hope he is not out for a prolonged period, but they did enough despite a below-par performance to hold out for another impressive victory.

Leicester produce stunning comeback at Southampton

Struggling Southampton squandered a two-goal lead against fellow newly promoted side Leicester in a dramatic 3-2 defeat for the winless hosts at St Mary’s.

Saints, in need of a win, began positively and were in front after seven minutes when Cameron Archer latched onto Ryan Manning’s cross to score from close range.

Leicester improved having fallen behind, but Southampton soon doubled their lead through Joe Aribo, who met a low cross from Kyle Walker-Peters to convert.

The visitors had no intention of going down without a fight, though, and after squandering several chances, they got a goal back on 65 minutes through Facundo Buonanotte, who bundled the ball over the line after good work from Abdul Fatawu on the right flank.

There was drama soon after, when a VAR review resulted in a red card for Ryan Fraser and a penalty, from which Jamie Vardy levelled.

Leicester dominated the final stages and with seconds left they found the winner, Jordan Ayew scoring from a corner to leave Southampton stunned.

Toffees ease past toothless Ipswich

Everton cruised to a 2-0 win over Ipswich at Portman Road to make it four games unbeaten in the Premier League.

After a delayed kick-off due to turnstile issues, it was Everton who started brighter and took the lead after 17 minutes. Iliman Ndiaye took advantage of some hesitant defending to lash home from close range.

Some more questionable Ipswich defending from a corner allowed Everton to double their lead before the break, with Michael Keane smashing an emphatic finish past Arijanet Muric.

Ipswich were unable to threaten a well-organised and disciplined Everton side, who saw out the remainder of the half to move further clear of the bottom three and continue their resurgence. For the hosts, a first top-flight win in 2024/25 remains elusive.

Spurs and United claim much-needed wins

Elsewhere, there were important wins for Tottenham and Manchester United, who went into the international break downhearted.

Spurs came from a goal down to thrash West Ham 4-1 in the early kick-off, live on TNT Sports. Goals from Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma, Heung-min Son - as well as an Alphonse Areola own-goal - fired the hosts to victory, while The Hammers saw goalscorer Mohammed Kudus sent off.

United also came from behind against Brentford at Old Trafford, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund in a much-improved second-half display.
