Mohamed Salah 'has not played anywhere near the level he can' this season for Liverpool

Ally McCoist has said that Mohamed Salah's drop in form has played a part in Liverpool's struggles this season ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Sunday. The Liverpool and Egypt forward has not hit the same remarkable heights he was at last term. Liverpool have also struggled as a whole, and are currently seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

TNT Sports expert Ally McCoist believes that Liverpool's disappointing performances this season are partially a result of Mohamed Salah’s lapse in form.

The Egyptian forward enjoyed one of the best campaigns of his career last term, producing 34 goals and 23 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

However, he has not hit the same heights this time around, and currently has just five goals and three assists in 15 appearances during the 2025/26 season.

Liverpool have had a difficult time in recent weeks and started the weekend in third place in the Premier League table after 10 games ahead of a crucial clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

McCoist responded to a question about Liverpool’s form by pointing out that Salah has not been the same player in front of goal this season.

"I just think people were ruffling them up, and that teams took them out of their comfort zone," he said ahead of Manchester United's clash against Tottenham Hotspur - live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

"It is blatantly obvious to me that there has been a drop in form from Salah.

"The first thing you have got to say is that if there is one player in the country that is entitled to have a little bit of a lapse in his form, it is him, because he has been absolutely unbelievable.

"I don’t think we are doing our job unless we state the facts, and the facts are that I don’t think he has played anywhere near the level that he can."

Manchester City head into their clash with Liverpool in second place after an impressive string of performances.

McCoist expects a great game between the two iconic Premier League clubs. However, he also believes that it is a fixture neither side can afford to lose.

"What a game, what a game to look forward to," he said. "I was at City on Wednesday night, I thought they looked excellent.

"Still no Rodri, but I thought it was as good as I have seen them for a while.

"Foden was just different class. I mean, he takes the ball on the half turn probably better than anybody.

"They were really, really solid. Liverpool look as if they have turned a corner a little bit.

"Obviously, they got the victory against Villa and then in midweek against Real Madrid, I thought they looked more like themselves.

"Even at this early stage, it is a game that neither of them can afford to lose."
