Bernardo Silva scored a Premier League goal of the season contender for Manchester City in their 1-1 draw against West Ham United, but TNT Sports' expert team at the London Stadium were not convinced that he meant the strike, which was clipped over Mads Hermansen from a tight angle after he was played in on the left side of the home team's box by Omar Marmoush.

That was the question after Bernardo Silva scored a stunning Premier League goal for Manchester City against West Ham United.

Omar Marmoush played in Silva on the left edge of the box at the London Stadium and the 31-year-old, using his left foot, clipped the ball over Mads Hermansen with his second touch.

Silva appeared to mouth that he "meant it" towards the bench as he celebrated the 31st-minute strike, which was cancelled out by a goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos later in the first half, but the TNT Sports team at the London Stadium was not convinced.

Joe Cole and Ally McCoist felt that Silva was attempting to deliver a cross and Joleon Lescott agreed with them.

Lescott said: "I don't think he meant it. If you look, he's not looking at the goalkeeper. He's looking at where the opportunity comes. Great build-up, patient build, probably the one time they forced the play and the error. It looks more glamorous than I think it is.

"If he says he meant it, I still wouldn't believe him. It would be the wrong decision for him to shoot from there. Bernardo Silva doesn't make wrong decisions.

"The fact he is shooting from there, even his face - his lips are saying one thing, his eyes are saying another."

Commentator Darren Fletcher described the goal as "absolutely magnificent", adding: "If he means it, it's astonishing. I think he's gone for that."

However, McCoist said: "I don't [think he meant it]. I think he's trying to hang it up at the back post. He's capable of it, because he's a genius, but I think he's trying to hang it up at the back post."

Cole said: "I agree with you, Ally."

The trio then watched replays of the strike.

Fletcher said: "This is the goal. Now watch him – [he’s saying] ‘I meant it’. You can go down there and tell that little fella he’s a liar, but that’s good enough for me."

Cole replied: "Listen, I hope he meant it. He’s a glorious player, but he’s said he meant it, his eyes said he didn’t."

Fletcher replied: "What are you, a detective?"

After Mavropanos' equaliser put a major dent in City's dwindling title hopes, Erling Haaland had a chance to retake the lead but "scuffed" his effort.

"He's scuffed it, he's scuffed it," said Fletcher. "That's the epitome of a striker lacking in a bit of confidence. And I never thought I'd say that about Manchester City's No. 9."

The game ended 1-1, leaving second-placed City nine points behind league leaders Arsenal, though Guardiola's side, who have now dropped 10 points from winning positions in 2026, have a game in hand.

City must now switch their attention to Tuesday night's last-16 second-leg tie against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium. They trail 3-0 from the first leg at the Bernabeu, where Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick.
