Cesc Fabregas is "free to go to Chelsea if he wishes" should the Premier League club want to appoint the Spaniard, the president of Como has said.

Chelsea are looking for a new permanent manager following their sacking of Liam Rosenior on Wednesday after just 106 days in charge.

Calum McFarlane has been named interim head coach until the end of the season as The Blues seek to finish strongly and qualify for European football next season.

Fabregas is one of the early favourites to replace Rosenior at Stamford Bridge, having led Como to the brink of UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time in their history.

And according to Como president Mirwan Suwarso, the club will not stand in his way if he wants to leave for west London.

"If that makes him happy, that’s him," Suwarso told City AM. "You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible but at the end of the day, we don’t own him and he’s free to go to Chelsea if he wishes."

Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder at Como, led the club to promotion to Serie A in 2024 and 10th place last season.

This year, Como sit fifth and in a Europa League qualification spot, five points off Juventus in fourth, with just a handful of games remaining.

Suwarso added that "as long as [Fabregas] doesn’t leave to an Italian club in competition" then Como can find a way for the 38-year-old to retain his stake in the club.

"Business is business, ideas are ideas. We have to see things in a way that makes sense, right? It’s common sense," Suwarso added.

Fabregas spent five years as a player at Chelsea having joined from Barcelona in 2014.

During his time at the club, he became an important part of the midfield and won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Europa League.

Fabregas also played for Arsenal and Monaco, before ending his career with a year playing for Como in Serie B in 2022/23.

His management of Como over the past three seasons has attracted a lot of attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs, and a return to Stamford Bridge could be his next move.

The Chelsea manager role is vacant after Rosenior's sacking following a poor run of results which culminated in their humbling 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, the fifth consecutive league defeat without a single goal scored.

Rosenior called the performance "unacceptable" but was sacked the following day.

Having been hired in January, Rosenior's time at Chelsea was rocked by the internal suspension of midfielder Enzo Fernandez for two matches.

Fernandez is often captain on the pitch when Reece James does not feature but gave an interview while on international duty, when he appeared to hint he would welcome a summer transfer to Real Madrid.

Rosenior was sacked just days before Chelsea face Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.
