‘It’s not good’ - Eddie Howe concerned over toothless Newcastle attack after Bournemouth draw

Newcastle United have just one win from six games so far this season after they were held to a 0-0 stalemate against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Speaking after the draw, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe was disappointed with the lack of ruthlessness on display and conceded that the team were finding it difficult to score in away matches.

Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle’s blunt display in a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth was "not good", and said his side find it "hard to score away from home."

Newcastle travelled to the south coast on Sunday in the Premier League after their midweek home defeat to Barcelona, when Marcus Rashford’s brace earned maximum points for the Catalans in their opening UEFA Champions League league phase match.

The Magpies managed just one shot on target against Bournemouth and four in total, with club record-signing Nick Woltemade unable to add to the goal he scored on his debut.

Newcastle are without another new signing, Yoane Wissa, who is out of action for several more weeks due to injury, and Gordon was serving the final match of his three-game suspension.

They have now failed to score in all three of their away games this season.

"We know Bournemouth are a really good team," said Newcastle manager Howe to the BBC. "We limited them to long shots and Nick made some good saves. We didn't get our attacking game going."

Asked about failing to produce a shot in the second half, he added: "It's not good. You want to create chances and clear-cut chances. It didn't feel like that in our performance. We are going through one of those phases where it's hard to score away from home."

Joe Willock and Lewis Miley started in place of first-choice midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, and Howe explained his selection, saying: "Joelinton we have to really protect from injury. He's just back. Bruno is different but the two who played today did really well.

"We're evolving and changing as an attacking force. Our ability to defend has been at a high level, and we will score goals."

Iraola: We have to value the point

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was content with a draw, noting that Newcastle are one of the top sides in the Premier League these days.

"We have to value the point, we are playing against a Champions League club," he told the BBC.

"I'm happy with the performance. The way we defended, we played in their half, and we didn't concede many set pieces. The ones we did, we defended really well.

"It is a good start. We were not as brilliant today as we were in previous games, but we have to be competitive. We have to keep this level of performance."

The result leaves Bournemouth in third spot in the league with 10 points, while Newcastle sit in 13th with six points.
