The Spanish coach also confirmed that fellow defender Josko Gvardiol could be out for a lengthy period after he suffered a fractured shinbone. Manchester City defender Ruben Dias could miss a string of crucial games for the club with a hamstring injury that might rule him out for six weeks.

City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the injury to the central defender in a press conference on Tuesday, and he also revealed that fellow defender Josko Gvardiol could be out for an extended period with a broken shinbone.

The defensive duo were injured during Sunday’s 1-1 home draw against Chelsea, which saw Enzo Fernandez rescue a point in stoppage time.

The draw left second-placed City six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal after 20 matches.

"Dias, hamstring, for four to six weeks. Gvardiol, out for a long time," Guardiola told the press ahead of Wednesday’s fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium.

"We have [Nathan] Ake back, a central defender. [Max] Alleyne has come back from his loan at Watford - we appreciate Watford for what they have done for the young lad. That is the situation.

"With the spirit that we have, always we can cope. Considering fatigue, we have to see the faces and take a decision tomorrow. Tomorrow we will see."

City have been linked with Antoine Semenyo at Bournemouth and a deal is anticipated to be completed in the coming days.

There have also been suggestions that injuries to Dias and Gvardiol could see City back in the transfer market for reinforcements.

Asked if City would repeat last winter’s big transfer spree, he explained: "Maybe we get something, but it is completely different. We are not going to buy four or five players like last season."

If Dias is out for the full six weeks as a result of his hamstring injury, then the Portuguese defender will miss some potentially crucial matches for City.

Dias will miss the league game against Brighton, and other Premier League matches he could forgo include an away tie in the Manchester derby against rivals United, a home match with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and away visits to Tottenham and Liverpool.

There is also the home tie against Exeter City in the FA Cup, two Carabao Cup semi-final legs against Newcastle, and UEFA Champions League matches away to Bodo/Glimt and at home against Galatasaray.

On February 11, Dias could be in contention for the home match against Fulham in the league, should he recover inside six weeks.

The 28-year-old has played 25 games in all competitions for City so far this season, scoring twice.
