Michael Carrick has refused to rule out a late title challenge from Manchester United as the season enters its final stages.

After taking over from Ruben Amorim, who was sacked at the start of January, Carrick has worked wonders at United, winning six of his first seven games in charge.

The former Red Devils midfielder guided the club to four wins on the spin at the beginning of his tenure, impressively beating Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

They are now 13 points adrift of leaders Arsenal with a game in hand, while they are eight points off Manchester City, who have played the same number of games.

However, United face a tough test at St. James' Park, where they have struggled to get anything of late, against Newcastle United on Wednesday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

"You can't rule anything out in football, but we've got to be realistic and know where it's at," Carrick said on the title race, ahead of the Newcastle game.

"I think we've just got to try and keep winning games and see. Above us now there are two fantastic teams. There are some really good teams in and around us.

"We've had a good run, we're certainly not getting carried away. Of course, I'm being realistic about it. We have to win a lot of football matches for that to happen."

Before Carrick's arrival, United were knocked out of both the Emirates FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, losing to League Two Grimsby Town in the latter.

Having finished 15th in the Premier League last season while suffering defeat to Spurs in the UEFA Europa League final, they are without European football this campaign for the first time in 11 years.

Their 10 remaining Premier League games are the only thing they have to focus on from now until the end of the season and it remains to be seen whether Carrick - who was appointed on a contract until the summer - will be in the hotseat next season.

"It's going to be every week, isn't it, this?" Carrick joked. "There's no getting away from the situation, of course. There's not really an awful lot I can say about it to be honest.

"I love being here. I love doing what I'm doing. I've said it from the start, I'm not making any decisions for short-term or quick fixes. Winning games helps and the boys are doing great with that.

"We'll just have to see where it ends up. There's not really much I can give you on top of that at the moment, really."
