Liverpool looked back to somewhere near their fluid attacking best on Saturday night as they produced an impressive performance to beat Newcastle United 4-1 in the Premier League. Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were the stars at Anfield and there was an emotional goal for Ibrahima Konate. But Mohamed Salah quietly set another top-flight record after setting up his side's third goal.

Mohamed Salah set another Premier League record after recording an assist in Liverpool's 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Egyptian, making his fourth appearance since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, set up Florian Wirtz for his side's third goal.

And that meant Salah became the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals and assists against a single opponent.

The 33-year-old had already scored 10 times against Newcastle and registered his 10th assist in the victory.

No other player has managed that feat, though Wayne Rooney did net 15 Premier League goals and provided eight assists against Newcastle.

Frank Lampard also came close, scoring 12 and getting nine assists against Bolton Wanderers, while Arsenal's Thierry Henry scored 12 and assisted seven times against Middlesbrough.

Salah could still make it double figures against two clubs: he has found the net 10 times and provided seven assists against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Salah has scored four goals and provided five assists in the Premier League for Liverpool so far this season.

His future at Anfield was in doubt in early December when he claimed he had been "thrown under the bus" by the club, having been left out of the starting line-up for three successive games.

But he has since rebuilt relations at Liverpool and is again a key player as Arne Slot's side look to push into the Premier League's top four.

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman highlighted Salah's importance to the team during TNT Sports' coverage of the Newcastle win.

"I think he gives Liverpool balance," McManaman said. "Whether he has a good game or a bad game is a talking point, but when he was at AFCON, Liverpool really missed him, they were very lopsided.

"He wants to play on the right, so when he plays and when he scores and when he stars in the game, Liverpool are a much, much better side when he's in it than when he's not.

"So I think relationships are fine and I think hopefully we'll see the best out of him now for the rest of the season."
