Tottenham Hotspur plan to make Roberto De Zerbi one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League after talks advanced with the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss on Monday, The Sun reports.
It is being reported Spurs are close to appointing De Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year deal, with the club hoping to avoid relegation with seven league games to go.
The Sun adds: ”De Zerbi, 54, had been reluctant to take over before the summer.
”But Spurs are hoping to persuade him with a lucrative five-year deal that will make the Italian one of the highest-paid bosses in their history.
”It would also make him one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League.
”SunSport understands a release clause has been discussed in the event that Spurs are relegated.”
Spurs to rip up wage structure
Spurs also plan to tear up the club’s previous wage structure and focus on more prominent signings should De Zerbi sign before the end of the season, The i Paper reports.
The i Paper adds: ”He had hoped to have the summer to get his somewhat radical ideas across. A source close to De Zerbi told The i Paper there had been contact from other Premier League clubs over the past few months.
”This was the type of role, sources added, that had 'huge potential' and for which De Zerbi had been waiting. He is keen to do it 'his way', implementing his philosophy at a team desperate for direction.
”In order to take the job earlier than he had envisaged, Spurs are willing to offer him a bumper pay package on a five-year deal.”
Liverpool eye… Luis Suarez?
Liverpool hope to sign Luis Suarez and are prepared to go head-to-head with Newcastle for the signature of the 28-year-old Sporting CP striker, the Daily Star reports.
Suarez has impressed for Sporting after Viktor Gyokeres left for Arsenal, and Liverpool are looking to increase their options despite spending almost £200 million on strikers last summer.
The Star adds: ”The Sporting forward, not to be confused with the former Liverpool and Uruguay striker who shares the same name, is experiencing the campaign of his career since his switch from Almeria last summer.
”Suarez has netted 33 goals and provided seven assists in just 42 matches to establish himself as one of Europe's most sought-after forwards.”
Anderson’s summer focus
Elliot Anderson will be at the centre of a summer transfer battle with Manchester United and Manchester City both interested in the Nottingham Forest midfielder.
However the England international has insisted his main focus will be the World Cup.
The Mirror adds: ”Anderson joins the likes of fellow England international Adam Wharton, Brighton star Carlos Baleba and Wolves ace Joao Gomes on United's shortlist, as they plan to sign a new midfielder in the summer transfer window.
”Last week, Casemiro confirmed that there'll be no U-turn on the decision for him to leave Old Trafford upon the expiry of his contract in June.”
