Ruud van Nistelrooy was left incensed after Harry Maguire headed in a controversial injury-time winner to send Manchester United into the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Ruben Amorim's side fell into familiar habits as they went behind once again at Old Trafford in a turgid first-half display, with the side booed off the field as a sixth defeat in their last eight home matches looked to be on the cards.

But an improved second-half showing spared the hosts' blushes, with the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho providing more attacking spark, and fellow substitute Joshua Zirkzee tapping home to level midway into the second half.

The tie looked to be heading for extra-time, before Maguire thumped home a header in the dying embers - a winner which sparked great controversy.

There is no VAR in this year's FA Cup until the fifth round, and that played into United's favour as replays of Maguire's winner appeared to show the defender in an offside position.

"We are not defeated in Fergie time. We are defeated in offside time," Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy told ITV after the full-time whistle.

"This wasn't necessary. VAR you have in a couple centimetres, a couple of inches, this was half a metre, clear in line.

"That was a hard one to take because the team deserves to draw in the end. Then extra time, stay in the game you never know what happens.

"It was a very good team performance, started really well, pressing United. On the ball very stable. Deserved to go 1-0 up at half-time. Of course we know in the second half they're going to put some pressure on us and some chances but not even that much.

"We deserved to go into extra time, go for the battle in extra time and maybe penalties. Decisions like these in our level are hard to swallow."

Despite starting the game to make his Manchester United debut, Patrick Dorgu played just 45 minutes for his new team before Amorim replaced the club's latest signing with Garnacho.

Amorim made the change with United trailing Leicester by a solitary goal at the break. Bobby De Cordova-Reid put the underdogs ahead with a close-range header, as United trailed at home for the second time in six days.

Considering the scoreline at the time, the change was likely tactical rather than enforced, with Dorgu showing no signs of any injury or fatigue, as well as looking comfortable in his new surroundings.

There was some confusion over Amorim's decision, with the wing-back - who was deployed on the right despite typically figuring on the left - showing some quality at the beginning of his United career.

He touched the ball 47 times in the opening period, won 100% of his aerial duels and was only one of only two United players to have a shot.

Garnacho's introduction, though, did prove to be game-changing. The Argentinian allowed United to build momentum with multiple forays forward, as Amorim's side struck twice to overturn their early deficit.

The United squad showed their support for injured team-mate Lisandro Martinez ahead of the game.

It was announced on Thursday that Martinez suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during United's league defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Argentina defender was stretchered off during the match, after his boot got stuck in the turf when trying to catch Ismaila Sarr with a quick turn of pace towards the United goal.
