Ruben Amorim explained that players will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, but downplayed the significance of any potential big-name departures this summer, after what has been a poor campaign in the Premier League. However, the club are still fighting for silverware on two fronts, in the FA Cup and UEFA Europa League. They host Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round.

Ruben Amorim admitted that players will have to leave Manchester United at the end of this season in a squad overhaul but said those that do leave "will understand".

The United manager added it is something which is commonplace in football in his comments to the media ahead of their FA Cup fifth-round tie against Fulham on Sunday.

He said: "We can talk about that [departures] at the end [of the season].

"We have a lot of games to play. But that is clear, and I think that is not a difficult situation because everybody understands that in football; sometimes you stay, sometimes you have to move on.

"When you are honest with someone, they can take it. In the beginning, it is hard, but they will understand. So I'm quite honest with my players and they already know that sometimes they have to move on at the end of the season."

The Red Devils are on course for their worst Premier League season after finishing eighth in the 2023/24 campaign.

An alarming run of form in this campaign means United look set to comfortably surpass that unwanted record, with the club languishing in 14th.

It has led to suggestions that Amorim underestimated the scale of the job at Old Trafford since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.

Keen to dismiss this, Amorim added: "I knew the situation.

"It's hard because the perspectives can be different. So, it's hard to say if they [the club] are honest or not.

"I felt that they were honest, but I need to see things and to feel things myself. So it's always a difference of opinion in that matter. So I knew the situation. I knew that it was a risk, but we are surviving and doing everything.

"I think today is really hard. But this is going to help us in the future. So I have hope. We will see. I think the good thing is that we have a clear path.

"Now is hard, but we are doing things to achieve success in the future."

The FA Cup gives United a chance for a winning finish to the season, as Amorim looks to retain the trophy won last season with a surprise victory over Manchester City.
