David De Gea's shocking error almost proved costly during Fiorentina's dramatic play-off tie against Jagiellonia Białystok in the UEFA Conference League.

The Serie A side held a commanding 3-0 advantage following the first leg away from home, but were taken to extra-time in Florence on Thursday after a remarkable comeback from the visitors, levelling the tie at 3-3 thanks to Bartosz Mazurek's hat-trick.

Fiorentina then took a 5-3 aggregate lead in the second period of extra-time, with goals from Nicolo Fagioli and Taras Romanczuk appearing to put the tie to bed.

However, they were given a late scare after a howler from De Gea halved the Polish side's deficit with two minutes left to play.

Jesus Imaz took aim from over 25 yards out with a low strike, which, despite bouncing in front of the former Manchester United goalkeeper, looked as if it would be routine to deal with.

But instead of parrying the effort away from danger, De Gea allowed the shot through his palms and into the back of the net.

Fortunately for the Spaniard, who had come on at half-time, his side held on for the remainder of extra-time, with the visitors going down to 10 men in the final minutes of the contest, while in pursuit of an equaliser.

Despite progressing into the last 16 of the competition, it was a concerning display from Paolo Vanoli's side as they threw away their 3-0 lead on home soil.

Mazurek had not scored in the Conference League this season, but his impressive hat-trick drew his side level in the tie by the 49th minute on Thursday night.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring from close range, tapping home from a yard out after his one-on-one attempt squirmed under Luca Lezzerini, who started the match in goal for the hosts.

Mazurek scored his second of the night with a deflected strike on the brink of half-time before he completed his treble with a tidy finish into the bottom corner.

However, it was Fiorentina who advanced, and they will now face Rakow Czestochowa.

Fiorentina, who reached the Conference League final in 2023 and 2024 as well as the semi-finals last season, ended the league phase in 15th place, after winning three of their six fixtures and losing the other three.

It's been a difficult season for the Italian outfit, languishing towards the bottom of Serie A throughout the campaign, but seven points from their last three games have taken them out of the drop zone and up to 16th in the table.
