‘Players unhappy' - Aberdeen fans throw snowballs at HJK Helsinki goalkeeper to halt UEFA Europa Conference League clash

Aberdeen’s UEFA Europa Conference League clash at HJK Helsinki was held up on Thursday as the Dons’ players tried to stop the visiting fans from throwing snowballs at home goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa.

“I’m not too sure that has the desired effect,” said commentator Stephen Craigan on TNT Sports after the referee instructed Aberdeen captain Jonny Hayes to try and restrain the 1500-strong travelling support, who had made their way to the Finnish capital.

“The HJK players are unhappy because you can see the snowballs coming in from the Aberdeen fans.”

The game then had to stopped for a longer period as the pitch was cleared of snow in the second half.

Once the action got back underway, Aberdeen battled back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw in dramatic fashion.

However, both sides are already eliminated with PAOK and Eintracht Frankfurt progressing to the knockout stages.
